Mangaluru: Abhijit Shenoy, a resident of Bantwal, had filed a complaint at the Bunder police here against a person from Lucknow on November 22, 2013, regarding hacking of his e-mail account and subsequent blackmail by him.
He had alleged that Bhaskar Dutta, a senior technical officer at the National Botanical Research Institute at Sikandarbagh, Rana Pratap Marg, Hazratganj, Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, had hacked his e-mail account and created an online jobsite, providing Shenoy’s mobile contact number.
Dutta allegedly published photographs on the same site and blackmailed Shenoy, demanding Rs 5 lakh. He is also said to have threatened him that if he failed to pay the amount, adverse publicity would be made about him. Dutta also reportedly sent Shenoy obscene pictures and messages.
The Bunder police had booked him under the IT Act and were looking for him. Dutta’s application for anticipatory bail was turned down by the high court on two occasions. Left with no other go, Dutta arrived and surrendered at the Bunder station on Monday.
