The programme began with an invocation. Vice President of Matsya Mela Dr S M Shivaprakash welcomed the gathering. The programme was inaugurated by deputy commissioner A B Ibrahim by lighting the traditional lamp along with Mayor Jacintha Alfred and other dignitaries on the dais. DC Ibrahim later put live fish in a aquarium and symbolically inaugurated the three-day Matsya Mela.

Addressing the gathering DC Ibrahim said, “I am very happy to inaugurate “Matsya Mela 2016″. Whoever knows the taste of fish should come and work in Mangaluru. Since Mangaluru is famous for fish this is the right place for fish lovers. The market price for fish should be same and affordable for all, the price for fish should be fixed in Mangaluru. The availability of fish can be known through the website Now people can buy fish online. We need to make Mangaluru as the capitol for fixing the price for fish”.

He further said that fish is very clean since and it is in the water 24X7, We should forget the smell of fish. when man holds the fish with his dirty hands it will become smelly, instead of saying the fish is smelling, the nutritious value of the fish should be considered. The fish industry has great potential of providing jobs, it is immense and wide like the sea. There are a number of jobs in the fish related fields, such as fish catching, selling, packing, storage and expansion of the byproducts of fish. We can provide jobs to the people by developing aquariums, water sports, adventure sports and angling. The potential of the fish industry should be expanded so that more employment is generated. While concluding DC said that in India, Mangaluru should be the capitol to decide the price for fish.

Mayor Jacintha speaking on the occasion congratulated the organizers for the initiative in organizing Matsya Mela and wished every success.

Chairman Karnataka Fisheries Development Corporation Hiriyanna, MCC Commissioner Dr Gopalkrishna, V K Shetty, Dr H M Jayaprakash, Dr Shivakumar Magada and others were also present.
