Mangaluru: Chandrakanth (55 years) was diagnosed with Rheumatic Heart Disease, a severe mitral stenosis in Atrial Fibrillation. He was suggested to undergo Mitral Valve Replacement surgery in 2007. However, he postponed surgery in view of sternal incision.

He was progressively symptomatic and he decided to undergo open heart surgery and consulted Dr Jayashankar Marla, Consultant Cardiothoracic Surgeon at A J Hospital & Research Centre. He was offered minimally invasive surgery through small incision in the chest from the right side and he was willing to accept the new treatment option.

Subsequently, he underwent successful mitral valve repair with left atrial appendage ligation and modified maze procedure through minimal invasive approach from right side of the chest. A heart lung machine was connected through a small incision in the right thigh. Post surgery, his recovery was quick and he had an uneventful short stay at the hospital.

This first of its kind surgery reported in Mangaluru was successfully done at AJ Hospital & Research Centre by the team of doctors headed by Dr Jayashankar Marla (Consultant Cardiothoracic Surgeon) and Dr Madhav Kamath (Consultant Cardiothoracic Surgeon) with Dr Gourav Shetty (Consultant Cardiothoracic Surgeon), Dr Gururaj Tanthry (Chief Cardiac Anaesthesiologist), Dr Trevor Sequeira (Cardiac Anaesthesiologist) and other support staff.
