Mangaluru: The Mahila Congress staged a protest against the BJP government for “fooling” the people of the country, in front of the DC office here, on November 30.

Welcoming the protesters, the president of the district Mahila Congress, Mamatha Gatti said that the BJP government led by Narendra Modi came to power by fooling the people of the country. “Before coming to power, Modi had promised to bring back the black money from Swiss banks and credit Rs 15 lakh each to the accounts of every citizen within hundred days. But now, it has been almost one and half year and Modi has still failed to bring back the money from Swiss banks.” She also said that the price of day-to-day commodities has also gone up and the poor are unable to afford the price. “The BJP government is also trying to withdraw the Right to Education act, which was brought by the UPA government when it was in power,” she added.

She also stressed that the BJP government is trying to decrease grants for Zilla Panchayats and Taluk Panchayats under the 13th Finance Commission. “If the BJP government will adopt anti-people policies, the Mahila Congress will intensify its protest.”

Speaking on the occasion, state president of Mahila Congress, Lakshmi Hebbalkar said that the “communal” face of the BJP government should be exposed to the people of the country. Though India had a lot of diversity, it was still a democracy. Democracy allowed people to wear the type of clothes they wanted to wear, eat food they wanted to eat. “Immoral policing is not a trait of democracy,” she said.

On rising costs of day-to-day commodities, Lakshmi said, “There is a saying ‘Ghar Ki Murgi Dal Barabar’ and the Modi government has made this saying true by making Dal murgi barabar.” On the foreign visits of the PM, she said, “Sushma Swaraj, our Foreign Minister, is just a namesake minister. The portfolio should be held by our PM Modi himself, who is on a world tour.”

Lakshmi further said, “Every three months, Modi brings new advertisements such as ‘Selfie with Modi’, ‘Mann ki Baath’, ‘Beti bachao beti padhao’, ‘Swachh Bharat’ and ‘Ghar Ghar Modi, Har Har Modi’, but he has failed on all fronts.” She said that Congress believes in non-violence by the virtues it inculcated from Mahatma Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru. She also said that Media is the fourth pillar of the constitution. “When the Congress makes mistakes, the media has the right to correct us; likewise when the BJP makes mistakes, the media should correct them. When the BJP does good, we need to praise their work and when they make mistakes, we have to highlight these mistakes so that they can correct them.”

While concluding she said that the Congress was not protesting to get publicity but to bring awareness among the people about the anti-people policies by the BJP government.

Addressing the gathering, Minister U T Khader said that the BJP government came to power by fooling the people. “Modi assured to bring back the black money from Swiss banks and also assured to credit Rs 15 lakh to the accounts of every Indian. People were eagerly waiting for Modi to credit Rs 15 lakh to their accounts. Now, they have lost their hope because Modi himself is busy in foreign visits. The people are tired of waiting for the black money to come from foreign countries. Forget bringing back Black Money, First Bring Back Our PM to the Country.” Khader also alleged that the Modi government did not bring any project for the youth. “In 18 months of rule, the BJP government did not bring any people friendly projects. When Congress was in power, the BJP was commenting on Pakistan but when Modi became the Prime Minister, he invited Nawaz Sharif for the oath taking ceremony. Without Nawaz Sharif, Modi did not take the oath for the post,” he added.

Addressing the protesters, MLC Ivan D’Souza said that the Modi government launched ‘Jan Dhan’, a nationwide scheme launched by the Indian government in August 2014. “Through this scheme, financial inclusion of every individual who does not have a bank account is to be achieved and the BJP made Rs 30,000 crore from this scheme. For publicity, Modi has spent Rs 450 crore. The money is ours, the account is ours but the profit is made by the Modi government. Modi brought Swachh Bharat Abhiyan and spent Rs 150 crore for publicity. The broom is ours, we cleaned the streets and he got publicity. Later, he brought ‘Beti bachao beti padhao’ and spent Rs 600 crore for publicity. The daughters are ours, we spend money for their education and Modi gets the publicity. This shows that the BJP wants only publicity and the BJP government led by Modi has not implemented any development projects for the welfare of the people. Instead, Modi is pleasing the corporate world,” said Ivan.

MLA Shakuntala Shetty jested, “When Modi assured to credit Rs 15 lakh in our accounts, I thought we have four members at home and I will get Rs 60 lakh in our account. I was dreaming to clear my loan of Rs 65 lakh once the amount from Modi was credited to our account.” She further said that earlier Vasco da Gama had come to India to establish business and then came the British. “We started the Quit India against the British, but now PM Modi is running behind foreigners and inviting them to start their business in India.”

She also said that the atrocities against women are increasing day-by-day and it is the government’s duty to bring strict laws to punish culprits. “Rapists should be hanged in the middle of the road, whoever it is,” she added.
