Mangaluru: Mangaluru International Airport Customs officers have seized 0.93 kg gold in the form of a cylindrical rod-shaped object valued at Rs 24.25 lakh from a passenger who arrived at MIA from Dubai.

One ‘Premium’ brand speaker/woofer was brought by the said passenger who arrived by Air India Express flight IX 384 from Dubai. The passenger, whose name has not been revealed, was detained by the customs for further investigation. The speaker under detention was subject to detailed examination on Saturday November 7, and gold in the form of a small cylindrical rod, which was ingeniously concealed in the inner core portion of the speaker, was retrieved with the help of technically qualified persons.

On interrogation, the passenger agreed that he had intentionally concealed the gold to avoid detection by the customs and to evade payment of appropriate customs duties. The gold, weighing 0.93 kg, valued at Rs 24.25 lakh, was seized. The passenger was arrested and produced before the principal civil judge (senior division) and Chief Judicial Magistrate, Mangaluru, who remanded him to judicial custody for 14 days. Further investigation is on.
