Mangaluru: Members of the GSB community from Sri Venkataramana Temple offered puja to the Hindu sea god, praying for calmer waters, ample rains, prosperity of the city and to keeping away calamities like drought.
After the traditional puja was performed at Vardaraja Agencies Bunder by Pandit Acharya Narasimha, milk, coconuts, flowers and garlands of Tulasi and flowers were offered to the sea god by 50 community members accompanied by Trustee of the temple Adige Balakrishna Shenoy, M Padmanabha Pai and K Jayaraj Pai.
The puja is usually held during the two initial weeks of Sankramana. It is believed that during this period the gods will open the heavens and all the good things will happen on earth – the progeny of fish will survive in the sea, plants will grow better and the saplings that are planted by farmers will become paddy stalks and give food to the teeming millions. In the same way, people will also become more mature, fit to protect the creation of god and regenerate it.
