Mangaluru: ‘Innovation Hub’ to come up at Pilikula Regional Science Centre

Mangaluru: Addressing the media persons during the press meet held at Mangalore Press Club, S A Prabhakara Sharma-the member secretary at Pilikula Regional Science said, “A innovation Hub will be set up at the Science Centre which will be meant for “introducing the culture of research and innovation among students and teachers through creative activities. The government has sanctioned an innovation hub with a grant of Rs. 1.8 crore to the Pilikula Regional Science Centre. The “Hub” will be an additional attraction to the planetarium that is coming up in Pilikula now on the premises of the regional science centre.

Sharma further said, ” Out of Rs. 1.8-crore grant, the Union and State governments will contribute an equal share. The State government has released its share while the Union government’s share was awaited. More than 2,000 sq. ft. readily available on the ground floor at the regional science centre would be utilised for creating infrastructure. The laboratory would be set up as per the guidance of the National Council of Science Museums, Kolkata. The authorities of the centre would make a presentation on the activities planned at the centre before the authorities of the council at Kolkata on July 13″.

“The council has suggested that science exposure sessions to students could be organised with a target of at least 8,000 students a year. The students could be allowed to work in the hub on innovative projects after school hours and during holidays. Competitions could be held to keep the spark of creativity, innovation and design alive and thriving among students. Workshops could be conducted to generate ideas and film shows on inventions and on innovators could be organised. The hub would have a design studio to encourage students and teachers to conceive new designs and fabricate new items, products and craft. The council has suggested promotion of innovation hubs in schools” added Sharma.

Director of the centre, Dr KV Rao said, “The authorities of the regional science centre have held discussions with teachers and some doctors on components to be included in the project proposal to be placed before the council. Innovation Hub will help to encourage youth n innovative and creative activities. These would serve as springboards for new ideas and innovation and thus helping the society and economy to face future challenges and meet rising aspirations of the growing population. The Innovation Hub will have facilities for students/mentors like : Hall of Fame, Innovation Research Centre, Idea Lab, Design Studio, Tod Fod Jod/Break and Make Corner, Kabhad Se Jugad (Making useful things from scrap) corner, and Idea Box. The facility shall promote independent thinking, problem solving ability, nurturing creativity and generation of innovative ideas”.
