Mangaluru: Kannada Activists Arrested while Blackening English Signboards in Balmatta, Upper Bendoor

Mangaluru: The record of offices, business houses and establishments, schools etc. in the city and the district is dismally poor in displaying their names in Kannada on signboards, according to Kannada activists.

The district unit of the Karnataka Rakshna Vedike (Narayana Gowda faction) had announced a month ago that if Kannada signboards were not installed in front of establishments within the deadline of Kannada Rajyotsava Day, they would blacken the English names.

As there was no response from the business outlets, the KRV activists began implementing their threat by applying black colour to the signboards in Balmatta and Upper Bendoor on the Kannada Rajyotsava day.

They targeted the signboard of Cherry Square restaurant near SCS hospital on Upper Bendoor road and a few others set their eyes on some signboards near Dr Ambedkar circle.

Police teams from Kadri and Bunder soon arrived and stopped the activists from doing much damage. About 15 activists were reportedly arrested and taken to Kadri police station. They were released after about an hour and thirty minutes.
