Mangaluru: The Nagarika Hita Vedike staged a protest in a unique way against the unscientifically constructed roads at Mallikatte here, on October 20.
Addressing the mediapersons, Gerald Towers enacting as a man who had died in a road accident coming back to address his grievances, said, “I, among one of the dead due to the pathetic Mangaluru roads, have come from heaven to share my feelings with the people of the city as well as the elected members. I have taken permission from God to meet the peoples representatives who are not bothered to complete the road concreting work, leaving the road users including the pedestrians at risk.”
He further said that under the state government grant, the Mangaluru City Corporation has taken up concreting work in many places. In some places, the tar roads are better than the concrete roads. Do we need such unscientific concrete roads? he questioned.
Blaming the corporators of Kadri and Shivabagh ward, Gerald said that seven months ago, the Kadri and Shivabagh roads were concreted and they are in pathetic condition now. Before completing the road concreting work, the dividers have been put up in Mallikatta-Bendur road, which puts the two wheeler and pedestrians at risk. From Vas Bakery Bendur to Mallikatta, the road work is not fully completed. The two lane road suddenly becomes very narrow near Mallikatta Library and if any bus or lorry comes through it, the pedestrians do not have enough place to walk. Every day, there are accidents due to the narrow road in Mallikatta.
He also said that before the concreting work, the traffic flow was smooth but after installing the dividers people are facing severe problems using the road. Some of the drivers have hit their vehicles to the road dividers. Some buses do not use the Bendur -Mallikatta road. They use different routes and the passengers face problems. “If anyone dies due to accidents who is responsible? Why have the dividers been installed without completing the concrete work? Who is responsible for the accidents taking place on the Bendur – Mallikatta road because of incomplete work which puts all road users at unnecessary risk?” he questioned.
He demanded for the completion of the road work as soon as possible and for the removal of the dividers which are death traps specially to school children, pedestrians and senior citizens.
