Mangaluru: MP Kateel Honours Franklin who Averted Major Train Disaster

Mangaluru: Dakshina Kannada Lok Sabha member Nalin Kumar Kateel on Friday visited the house of Franklin Fernandes, who, showing remarkable presence of mind, prevented a major train disaster near his home in Pachanady last week.

Kateel said that Franklin indeed proved to be hero of the masses since he averted what could have been the worst train mishap in the district, involving over a hundred lives. Franklin, an agriculturist, had spotted a crack in the railway track while walking past to gather fodder. With no means to show as warning, he plucked a pagoda flower from a nearby plant and kept running towards the oncoming train on the track. The driver too sensed the danger, bringing the train to a screeching halt.

The MP said that as an initial mark of appreciation, a cash reward and a letter of commendation had been given to him. In the near future, the railway authorities are expected to formally honour him at a function.
