Mangaluru: Father Muller Medical Hospital held a press meet at the Council Hall here, on August 8.

Addressing the mediapersons, Director of FMMI Fr Patrick Rodrigues said that the Father Muller Medical College Hospital has been granted accreditation by the National Accreditation Board for Hospital and Health Care Providers (NABH). This has been effective from August 3, 2015.

He further said that Father Muller Medical College and Hospital is the only set up accredited not only by NABH but also by other accreditation boards. “As you may be aware Father Muller Medical College has to its credit, accreditation by NAAC with “A” Grade and all the Laboratories of our Medical College Hospital have been accredited by National Accreditation Board for Laboratories (NABL). To the best of our knowledge ours’ is the first institution in our state to achieve the accreditation by all the three bodies and probably one of the very few in the country,” he said.

“The accreditation process started a few years back and with the continuous dedication and hard work of every staff in this institution, we have over the years achieved this unique distinction. We are aware that with the accreditation, our responsibility to the stake holders has increased quite considerably and we will make a concerted effort to keep up this achievement by striving to do our best. It is noteworthy to say that all this has streamlined most of the activities of Medical College, Hospital and Laboratory of the Institution and we hope to provide hi-tech & qualitative services not only to our patients but also to our other important stakeholders, namely the students.”

Father Muller Charitable Institution with a history of 135 years having the motto ‘Heal and Comfort’, from the inception days of only service oriented set up, has gradually transitioned into the academic field from 1980. In 1991, the PG Programme was started and in 1999, the Medical College started functioning. The Institution also started collaboration with other universities in and out of the country for the benefit of students.

Other educational institutions of Father Muller Charitable Institution, namely Father Muller Homeopathic Medical College and Father Muller College of Nursing have been accredited with NAAC A grade. “One of our Institutions which is attached to Mangalore University, Father Muller College of Speech and Hearing is also accredited by NAAC. Our hospital is one of the oldest hospitals in this region and with a turnover of over 1500 outpatients and 1000 inpatients everyday, it is considered one of the biggest in this district. As you are all aware, we have the second largest Psychiatric setup in the state. The institution also has over 40 Intensive Care beds and the only hospital with Burns ICU. The Institution has a Leprosy Hospital a Rehabilitation Centre, probably one of its kind in this region.”

He said, “The institution has introduced many services, particularly in the field of Oncology, where in, we are proud to say that we are one of the few institutions in this region to have a full-fledged Radiation Oncology team & fully qualified Medical and Surgical Oncologists. The Institution has improved upon the existing facilities too, to meet the increasing demand of stake holders by having two MRI machines and two Cath Labs in the institution. A constant effort is on to improvise the infrastructure that is available on the campus and in coming years a huge auditorium with 1250 capacity, a State of art indoor stadium, to meet ever increasing need of parking a multi storied parking complex is also being constructed. A new Super specialty wing is also in the pipeline. To provide safe environment and particularly to provide security to our lady students, the Institution has built an additional hostel inside the campus too. To accommodate the increasing student population, a modern hostel complex has also come up. To improvise the services to the community, a state- of-the- art rural health centre has been set up with all the facilities at Thumbay near our recently established Hospital at Thumbay. Of late it has extended its activities to eight sub centers so as to serve the community at their door steps. The Institution is already in the process of establishing a Simulation Lab worth Rs. 10 crore and in last year free care worth Rs. 24 crore has been granted to deserving group of patients. Our parent university Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, Bangalore has selected Father Muller Medical College for the Smart University project.”

We are indeed happy to face the new challenges and in our efforts to improve the facility in this institution, we are looking forward to a continuous support and constant constructive criticism from every nook and corner, he added.

Fr Richard Coelho, Fr Ajith Menezes, Fr Rudolph D’Sa, Fr Roshan Crasta, Sr Ilene, Dr J P Alva, Dr Sanjeev Rai and others were also present.

  1. Accredition in favor of Fr. Muller’s Hospital was a long awaited desire. Finally the day has arrived. Congratulations to Fr. Patrick and all the rest of the team who have strived so hard to maintain the standard as well as the quality of the well deserving Institution such as Fr. Mullers for all that they have dedicated. The legacy of Fr. Mullers and all Directors and the workforce deserve this auspicious award.

The Diocese of Mangalore is the ultimate beneficiary of this recognition. Bishop Aloysius has strived so long to make this Institution a world class Medical Institution. Thru his leadership and determination Fr. Mullers were also privileged to have the Medical College that has progressed so well with hundreds of students Graduated. The learning process in the field of Medicine also gets a share of the dedication for the patients and the rest of the staff.

Congratulations once again, and God bless

  2. Father Muller’s Charitable Institutions have a long history. The seed that was sown by Father Muller over one hundred and thirty-five ago has indeed blossomed and grown into a mighty tree. Indeed this Jesuit Priest who made a small beginning by dispensing homeopathy medications perhaps did not dream that his work would flourish and that it would what it is today. As the legend goes…. PEOPLE HAD SO MUCH CONFIDENCE IN FATHER MULLER THAT THEY FLOCKED AROUND HIM. IT IS EVEN SAID THAT SOME HYPOCHONDRIACS WHO USED TO IMAGINE AILMENTS WERE SOMETIMES TREATED BY HIM WITH MERE SUGAR PILLS AND THE PATIENTS PROFESSED THAT THEY WERE ALRIGHT. SUCH WAS THE FAITH IN FATHER MULLER. SEVERAL JESUITS CONTINUED THE MISSION DURING THE YEARS TO FOLLOW. Some decades ago the mission was taken over by The Mangalore Diocese and the contingent of secular priests are continuing the tradition build by their predecessors. Therefor it is not surprising at all that NABH has granted accreditation to F.M.C.I.

The present management under the direction of Father Patrick Rodrigues is in the process of taking THIS GREAT INSTITUTION TO GREATER HEIGHTS.
