Mangaluru: Senior Congress leader Janardhan Poojary held a press meet at the District Congress Office here, on July 24.
Addressing the mediapersons, Poojary said, “The media is entitled to freedom of speech and expression by our constitution. These days corruption, scandals, scams and irregularities in government offices are being exposed through the media. The media has played a vital role in bringing changes in the society and no one can snatch the freedom of the press. When the media is active, democracy is safe on our country.”
Poojary further said that prime minister Narendra Modi is trying to snatch the rights of the media and is trying to bring “emergency” in the country. “He is also trying to make the Parliament and the Judiciary weak. We all know that some entrepreneurs are backing our PM. The news channel CNN-IBN has been taken over by the Ambani group and all the news coming from it is in favour of the BJP government.”
He further said, “PM Modi, before coming to power, promised to curb corruption and make this country corruption free. Now why are you (Modi) maintaining silence? Keep the promise that you made to the citizens of this country and be a role model.” He said that those who are involved in corruption or scams should be punished. “Law is equal for everyone and those who commit crime should be punished. In the Vyapam scam, more than 50 persons have died and students have also become victims. Why is there no comment from the Prime Minister over the Vyapam scam?” he questioned.
“If he (Modi) thinks that Vasundhara Raje, Sushma Swaraj and Shivraj are innocent, then let him prove it. It is the duty of the PM to prove the innocence of Vasundhara Raje, Sushma Swaraj and Shivraj, but in this issue Modi has maintained silence. After coming to power, the union government has not kept its promises. Even the prime minister is trying to form a committee in RBI to curb the power of the governor. The Shiv Sena has already considered Modi as Hitler. It is high time that the people of this country realise that we have been fooled by the BJP government,” he said.
Deputy Mayor Purushotham Chitrapur, Harikrishna Bantwal, Shashidhar Hegde and others were also present.
