Mangaluru: Rationalist Associations Condemn Killing of Prof M M Kalburgi

Mangaluru: Prof Narendra Nayak, president of the Federation of Indian Rationalist Associations, in a media release, has strongly condemned the dastardly murder of Dr M M Kalburgi by the reactionary elements who want to silence the voices of reason in this country.

He has stated that such such attacks could only make the resolve of people like him even stronger. By such cowardly acts these forces were showing their fear of reason, he has said.

He has demanded that the government take appropriate steps to bring to justice the killers of Dr Kalburgi and see that proper protection is given to those under threat.

  1. As an agnostic who rejects all organized religions and superstitions, I strongly condemn any effort to silence voice of reason by religious thugs. We should be able to mock or question ALL religious beliefs and traditions. I have no doubt that the real culprits would be brought to justice. I also encourage rationalists and progressives to get equally tough on ALL religions. It is much easier to criticize sanathana traditions. However, I haven’t seen a single soul with enough courage or honesty to criticize those who ban any cartoons of pravaadi. This is why rationalists and secular groups are not taken seriously in many countries including India. How sad.

    • In a genuine democracy take, for instance, U.S.A., their citizens are treated equally, irrespective of their religions and whether they believe in God or not. A principled, rational and unprejudiced person will not respect another just because he happens to be his kith and kin or relation, from the same community or religion. He will respect a person or persons, if they are honest, efficient, dependable and have all the right qualities that the former is expecting from the latter. In an organization, a good boss will not see if his subordinate is very religious, overly polite, a boot-licker and one who is ready to compromise to please him (boss), but an employee who is hardworking, has high ouput, works with no or minimal supervision, is punctual, honest, has transparency and integrity and, in meetings and discussions to thrash out decisions, is critical from professional point of view and not a “haan jee”.

As far as I am concerned I do not get carried away by people who pose to be religious, but their actions speak otherwise. In the same vein, I do not get carried away by the “Babas” and other fakes. My logic is that why do we require these Godmen, when they are mere morals and humans, who fall sick like any other mortals, take medicines and have to be treated by the best doctors? If they have spiritual powers, then they will not fall sick, will not require the services of doctors, would no need for medicines and would not die, but live in perpuity doing good to the downtroden and alleviating poverty.

Amongst Indians, I respect some and, to name a few, Field Marshal Manekshaw, Mother Teresa, Dalai Lama, Dr. A.P.J. Kalam, Mahatma Gandhi, Havildar Abdul Hamid (who won Param Veer Charka for his exploits during the 1965 war in single-handedly destroying some of the much vaunted Patton tanks by throwing hand-grenades at its vulnerable parts and with his jeep-mounted Bren gun). I have great respect for military personnel who are true heroes and because of them, I have sound sleep in the nights.

I do not admire Bollywood filmstars and cricketers (who are rewarded countless times their true worth) for churning out mostly films that are cocktails, stereotype, lack any morals or story, but are cheap entertainment. If the English saying, “Actions speak louder than words,” is true, then there is one Bollywood star does anything for money. They say that he is a megastar. Whether people would agree with me or not, why have his films not won a single international award – except for the Filmfare, Stardust and other domestic awards, which are just social get togethers. They lead surreal lives.

Thanks to people’s stupidity, cricketers have Godmen of some sorts and they consider themselves as a special breed like filthy rich citizens of Switerland, Luxembourg, Liechtenstein or Monaco (and not Indians – a country with low per capita income). This stupidity has also allowed Godmen and other undesirables to flourish.

If anyone says, tweets, draws or does anything that is offensive or ruffles people, then they can demonstrate, approach police or courts, but they have no right to take law into their own hands or dispense Kangaroo justice.
