Mangaluru: Repair Work on Old Bridge at Kulur Causes Heavy Logjam

Mangaluru: The Kulur bridge across river Phalguni had been built in 1960s with the efforts of the then-MP Ullal Srinivas Mallya.

As the city grew and the traffic increased as a result of industrialization and urbanization, a parallel bridge on the western side was built during the later years. This facilitated one-way traffic movement along either side on this stretch of the Edapally-Panvel national highway 66.

The old bridge being fifty years old often needs repairs. Now the repair and restoration work on the old bridge has been taken up. To avoid inconvenience to road-users, work on such points is executed only in the nights. But on Monday, the work began at 4 pm.

As commuters kept moving in either direction after the weekend break, the effects were felt. The single-lane movement on the old bridge, added to by indisciplined driving practices, caused heavy logjams for long hours.

The limited number of police staff had a tough time in controlling the situation.
