Mangaluru: Sage of Literacy Harekala Hajabba Chosen to Receive DD Chandana Award

Mangaluru: Every year, the Doordarshan Chandana Kannada TV channel honours individuals from different fields who render remarkable service or contribute to the betterment of the society,

It has chosen two organizations and ten individuals for the award this year. Harekala Hajabba, who, from a humble fruit-seller became a promoter of literacy by setting up a school in his native village of New Padpu on the outskirts of this city, is among them.

Being deprived of early education himself, he set upon himself a mission to ensure that other poor children should not face the same fate. The entire funding was from the proceeds of his fruit-selling trade. Even until today, he continues to sell fruits in the central market for the most part of the day and then spend a few hours at the school.

State governor Vajubhai Vala will present the awards to the recipients at a function to be held in Ravindra Kalakshetra in Bengaluru on Sunday, Nov 15. They are as follows:

Mogalli Ganesh – literature
H K Ramanath – theatre
Burrakatha Jayamma – folklore
Pramila Muralidhar – gamaka
Harekala Hajabba – education
Vidushi Dr Shakuntala Narasimhan – music
Satyanarayana Raju – dance
Dr H N Venkataramana – healthcare
Somanath Reddy Poorma – agriculture
G K Vijayakumari – sports
Women’s Development volunteer organization, Belagavi – social service
Technomark TV Network Pvt Ltd – serials
