Mangaluru: Thieves broke into Shri Somanatha temple located on Devanda hillock in Inoli of Pavoor village off Mangaluru University past midnight on Tuesday.
The theft came to the attention of the priest who arrived on Wednesday for the routine rituals. The latch of the main entrance was found broken open. A silver idol of one and a half kilogramme, called balimurti in local parlance, was found to have been taken away.
While three alms collection boxes were also broken and petty cash taken away, other copper and brass items remained untouched. The silver idol itself was worth Rs 2.50 lakh. The total loss is said to be Rs 3 lakh.
The theft appears to be a well-planned job. The temple being situated on a hillock, about one and a half kilometres from the side of the Inoli road, not many are familiar with the road. Hence it is thought to be the handiwork of persons with full knowledge of the whole place.
Besides, the thieves have taken away the control unit of the CCTV system, which has made it impossible to get any clues on the identity of the culprits.
The Konaje police have registered a case.
