Mangaluru: The Deputy Commissioner held a meeting to discuss the compliance report of various institutions in regard to installation of CCTVs in their premises, at his office here, on December 7.

During the meeting, a representative of Masjids gave vague answers on whether the cameras would even be installed or not, to which DC Ibrahim furiously asked him to give a proper answer or not appear for the meeting at all. All religious institutions should comply with these instructions and submit a compliance report by the next meeting, said the DC.

He further said, “This is not a request. This is an order. Many untoward incidents happen at places like religious institutions, bars, etc. All this may seem too silly now, but when incidents occur, the footage from these cameras come in handy and allow swift action.”

Adding in, Superintendent of Police Dr Sharanappa said that many times, the police find accused individuals being helped by doctors, who provide them with bandages, prescriptions, etc. “Some people start fights, get admitted to hospitals and then come out with bandaged limbs. When they are checked, the injuries turn out to be fake. As this trend continues, we will start registering cases against doctors and take action against them. The doctors should not do injustice to their profession by colluding with criminals. If CCTVs cameras are installed at hospitals premises, we will get to know who went in, when and in what condition,” he added.

The DC Commissioner later dismissed the meeting, which will be held again in the second week of January. According to the DC’s instructions, CCTV cameras are to be placed throughout the entire city – in and around temples, masjids, churches and all religious places, schools, petrol stations, bars, hostels, government offices, bus stands, markets, and all public places. They should also have atleast one month of backup and the required storage capacity.

  1. Interesting….so, who is paying for the installation and operations of this equipment? Is it the government?

  2. “According to the DC’s instructions, CCTV cameras are to be placed throughout the entire city – in and around temples, masjids, churches and all religious places, schools, petrol stations, bars, hostels, government offices, bus stands, markets, and all public places” – Report.

Interesting!! Does DC’s office have the authority to enforce these rules on citizens and businesses? Is this legal? I honestly don’t know – Any legal experts?

Don’t get me wrong – If we have security camera all over the city, run by individuals/businesses (not centralized govt), it can be a good thing. I was just curious about the legality of such a compliance requirement.
