Mangaluru: The Indian Union Muslim League staged a protest against those objecting the celebration of Tipu Jayanti, in front of the DC’s Office here, on November 9.
Addressing the protesters, president of the DK District Muslim League Ahmed Jamal said that Tipu Sultan was a patriot and he was a freedom fighter. “The state government has decided to celebrate the birth anniversary of Tipu Sultan but many people are highlighting him in bad light. We accept that some of the Christians in Canara were tortured by Tipu because of their involvement in supporting the British. Tipu was not against the Christians or the Hindus. When Sringeri Math, which was established by Shankaracharya, was invaded by the Maratha army, Tipu provided financial support for the re-installation of the holy idol. We welcome the decision of the state government in celebrating Tipu Jayanti.” He demanded the government to take action against those who obstruct the celebration of Tipu Jayanti.
Addressing the protesters, vice president of the DK District Muslim League Ismail said that those who are against celebrating Tipu Jayanti are not patriots. “They do not have respect towards patriots who sacrificed their lives for the country. The government should take measures to build a university in Tipu’s name since it had assured to build a university in Tipu’s name before the elections. The government should fulfill the assurances. U B Mallya, who brought Tipu’s sword back from a foreign country, should also be felicitated.”
He further said that Tipu was not against Hindus. Infact, he supported the temples in various places. He has given land to Christians. He did not discriminate between anyone. Tipu had doubts that weapons were hidden in the churches so he had taken Christian missionaries as prisoners.” He also said that the history on Tipu’s patriotism should be included in school history books. “Family members of Tipu are living in poverty in Kolkata. They should be given all the state respect and all facilities should be provided to them,” he added.
Prof Khalid addressing the protesters said, “We, the Indian Muslims, are regarded as the topmost Muslims in the world because we have given Tipu Sultan and APJ Abdul Kalam to the country. Our religion is a great religion, and we respect Hinduism and Christianity too. Tipu Sultan was known for his self-respect and patriotism. The decision of the state government to celebrate Tipu Jayanti is a right decision, welcomed by the Muslim league. We celebrate Valmiki Jayanti, Bhagat Singh Jayanti, Gandhi Jayanti, etc. Tipu was a great leader, so we need to celebrate Tipu’s birth anniversary.”
Later, a memorandum was submitted to the DC. Basheer Ullal, Hassan, Sherif Jokatte, M K Ashraf, Mohammed and others were also present.
