Mangaluru: As people all over watched the news and images of the devastation in Nepal and some parts of India with utter shock and disbelief, there were reports of tremors being felt here in the city and also in Manipal.

However, there has been no official confirmation from the district administration until last reports came in.

Curiously enough, tremors were reportedly felt at the same spot in an earlier instance on April 11, 2012. Employees of Reliance, a private FM radio channel and a few other offices in the Maximus commercial complex on the Lighthouse Hill road ran out and came in the open on feeling the aftershock around 11-50 on Saturday

They said that the earth shook two or three times over about 30 seconds. Some of the employees in the complex ran to the terrace out of panic and for protection.

There had been a similar experience in the same building and the adjacent Lobo Prabhu Court three years ago. The tremors on Saturday that coincided with the quake in Nepal has caused a serious concern among some citizens.

A few office-goers, although admitting to be unsure of a scientific base to their line of thinking, expressed that indiscriminate and haphazard real estate development around Lighthouse Hill and also close to the sea could pose serious problems in the future. One of them said that a study should be conducted on this subject.

Similar reports have been received from Manipal in Udupi district. People on the fifth floor of a media house premises said they felt the tremors.
