Mangaluru: Two Die of Electrocution while Plucking Tender Coconuts

Mangaluru: Balakrishna (43) of Bijai New Road and Narayana (40) of Adyar were electrocuted and died on the spot at Baikampady on late Monday night.

They were employees of Ratna Automobiles located near BPCL. They were trying to pluck tender coconuts from a tree located in the compound of the same firm.

They used a long steel rod for the purpose. It accidentally touched the overhead high-tension power-line. They suffered electric shock and died.

The power supply tripped immediately. When the MESCOM staff came to check the fault, the incident came to light.

They were close friends of many years and had worked in the industrial estate at Yeyyadi together. Four years ago, both of them had left and began working at different places.

At Balakrishna’s request, Narayana too joined Ratna Automobiles about three months ago. Narayana hailed from Barebail but got a house built in Padil and stayed there ever since. However, he was finding the daily movement to Baikampady and back inconvenient and was looking for alternative employment. He is survived by wife and a daughter.

Balakrishna leaves behind wife, and a son and a daughter, who are very young in age. Both families have been in dire straits as they have lost their sole breadwinners.
