Mangaluru: MLC Candidate Harikrishna Bantwal held a press meet at Hotel Woodlands here, on December 24.
Addressing the mediapersons, Harikrishna Bantwal said that the Congress party has proved that there is no respect to anyone who has worked for the welfare of the party. “The Congress party has selected Pratapchandra Shetty as the MLC candidate even though he did not visit any gram panchayat nor any zilla panchayat. The forthcoming MLC elections will bring a unique result and the intellectuals of DK district will surely elect an able candidate.”
He further said, “For 43 years, I have worked for the Congress party. I have worked as an efficient speaker for the party. Ramanth Rai, the Minister for Environment, Forest and Ecology had said that Dakshina Kannada needed a candidate from the backward class and said that Harikrishna was a ‘genuine candidate’ for the post. But there is no opportunity for persons from the backward class to contest the MLC elections.”
“Infact, I was not interested in contesting the elections but some party leaders insisted me to contest and according to their wish, I thought of contesting the MLC elections. But when I was denied the ticket, I thought of contesting the elections as an independent. I will surely win with a huge margin because people have seen my work in the district. If I will be elected, I will raise the issue of Yettinahole project and I will insist the government to stop the project. I will surely bring the Kerala Model Panchayat system in DK. I will also work hard to increase the honorary payment for the Panchayat members.”
He also said that power and chair are not permanent. “Our leaders think that chair and power is permanent. Even Duryodhan, Ravan and Napoleon failed to retain their chair, then how can Congress leaders retain their chairs? Congress leaders came to power and they became politicians because of the people who voted for them. The people should elect an able leader who can solve the problems of the people. This time surely the people will elect Harikrishna Bantwal as their leader and Congress will surely learn a lesson from this election,” said Harikrishna.
“No one should be a slave. We have to be leaders in the party. Those who win the elections and become ministers have an obligation towards the party, but I, Harikrishna Bantwal, did not get any favour from the party. I have worked for the development of the party without any expectations. Oscar did not do anything for the party in his entire career in politics. If he has done any single work, let them show it to me. Until Oscar Fernandes is in Congress, I will not return to the party. It is a tragedy that Oscar is still in the party. Out of 6599 voters, 80% of the voters are from the backward class and it is a shame that the Congress did not give the opportunity to the backward community to contest the MLC elections. How can I sit quietly when my own community has been neglected after serving for the party for too long?” he questioned.
Sashiraj Shetty Kolambe was also present at the press meet.
