Mangaluru: DK District Ex-Servicemen’s Association held a press meet at Mangalore Press Club Urwa here, on December 14.
Addressing the mediapersons Col N Sharath Bhandary said, “It is customary to celebrate ‘Vijay Diwas’ in our country on December 16. This is the day when 93000 Pakistani Uniformed Forces under the command of Lt Gen AAK Niazi surrendered to Lt Gen JS Arora of Indian Army, at Ramna Race Course in Dhaka the Capital of erstwhile East Pakistan after a short war of 13 days.”
“This created a new history and paved the way to the foundation of the independent country of Bangladesh. Sheikh Mujibur Rehman became the founder Prime Minister of Bangladesh,” he added.
Sharath further said, “In July 1972, after talks between our then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and Pakistan Prime Minister ZA Bhutto, the Shimla pact was formalised as an agreement under which the captured territory of 13000 Sq Km and Prisoners Of War were returned to Pakistan. The PsOW included 200 soldiers sought for war crimes by Bangladesh.”
“Commemoration Ceremony for ‘Vijay Diwas’ will be celebrated under the joint aegis of Lions District 317-D, Shasthavu Bhothanatheshwara Temple Trust and DK District Ex-Servicemen’s Association on Wednesday, December 16. Flowers will be laid at the War Memorial, Kadri Hills Mangaluru at 9 am, to pay our respects to those intrepid soldiers who fought for the country and laid down their lives in the line of duty,” he added.
