Update (20.00) Speaking to the mediapersons, DC Ibrahim said that counting in all the 5 centres in DK is going on well. In Beltangady, Sullia, Puttur and Bantwal, counting will be completed by 7 pm but in Mangaluru the counting will be completed by 9 pm.He further said that there was a tie between 3 candidates in Sullia, 2 in Beltangady and 1 in Mangaluru, lots were drawn in all the cases and the winners were announced.When asked why the counting process had been delayed in Mangaluru, the DC said that the first round of counting took 4 hours and hence all the others rounds were delayed. In the district, the counting process is going on very smooth and no untoward incidents have been reported.One of the counting staff from Room No 2, counter number 66, collapsed while on duty. He was taken to the hospital.Another notable event of the day was when BJP candidate Sucharith Shetty got upset over the counting results. He was defeated by 12 votes. Sucharith Shetty tried to force the Returning Officer to recount the votes.Later, the issue was settled with the intervention of the officers.

In Mangaluru, the second round counting process is still going on without any clear results. At the present rate of counting, the results maybe delayed.
Update (09.25) Speaking to mangalorean.com, Deputy Commissioner A B Ibrahim said, “The first round of counting the ballots of the Gram Panchayat elections began at 8 am. As the counting is manual, the results will be delayed because the counting process will take atleat 2 hours to complete. The results of the first round will be out by 10.30 am. During the Assembly and Parliament elections, we had announced the results by 10 am.”

He further said that the results of the second round will be announced at 1 pm, the third round at 4 pm and the final round will be completed before 6 pm.

“To provide information, we have opened a media center. The election observers have visited the center and appreciated the arrangements. We have also taken all the measures for safety, food and other basic facilities for the election officers and others who are involved.”

When asked how the winner would be announced if there is a tie, DC said that the lots system will be applied to select the candidate. “I expect that it will be a closely fought contest.”

Update (08.40) The first round of the counting began at 8.30 am, as the counting of ballots is manual it will take one hour to finish the counting.

The vote counting process began at the Padua Educational Institutions at 8 am. Five centers have been set up in DK, they are: Padua Educational Institution (Mangaluru), Infant Jesus English Medium School Modankapu (Bantwal), SDM PU College (Ujire, Beltangady), Vivekananda College (Puttur) and Nehru Memorial (Sullia).
Police had a tough time trying to control the crowd. They couldn’t differentiate between the candidates and the agent since they were all trying to force their way in. The police tried their best at the entrance to keep the crowd away from the counting centre, which had many candidates eagerly waiting to get their result.
