Mangaluru: Woman Falls for Sweet Talk and Confidence Trick, Loses Gold to Conman

Mangaluru: A case has been registered at the Bajpe police station regarding a young man having tricked a senior woman into parting with her valuables with his sweet talk.

Pushpa, the senior woman, is staying alone. When she had been to the primary health centre in Bajpe recently, a young man introduced himself as Praveen and won her confidence. He promised her that he would look after her just like he would in his mother’s case.

Pushpa appeared to have been impressed by his talk. On two or three occasions later, he repeated the same offer. This had a brainwashing effect on her.

Citing her state of insecurity, he then offered to keep all her valuables like gold, cash and documents in safe custody. In good faith, she parted with her gold weighing 5.7 sovereign, Rs 10,000 and the document of land registration.

Once he had the possession of the valuables, his attitude towards her changed. He began treating her rudely. Suspecting foul play, she demanded the money and other valuables back. He is said to have returned the cash and the land documents, but did not return the gold.

Hence she has complained to the police against him. On being enquired, the police said that in the first place his name may not be Praveen. Neither did she ask for his antecedents or background.

Many could blame her for being so gullible in falling for the sweet talk. The police say that they come across many cases of senior citizens being in a very sensitive state and mindset when abandoned or not cared for by their children in their old age.

They long for care and attention and easily fall prey to such conmen. The tricksters too know this very well and exploit the situation.
