Mathura violence: BJP demands CBI probe, threatens statewide protest

New Delhi, June 5 (IANS) Reiterating its demand for a CBI probe in the Mathura violence, the BJP on Sunday threatened to launch a statewide stir against the Uttar Pradesh government.

“A Commissioner-level inquiry ordered by Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav is to cover up the issue and to protect the main culprits. We reject this inquiry and reiterate our demand for a CBI probe,” Bharatiya Janata Praty (BJP) secretary Srikant Sharma told IANS.

He said that if a CBI probe was not ordered, the BJP will begin a statewide protest against the ruling Samajwadi Party at every district headquarter.

The Chief Minister has ordered a Commissioner-level inquiry into the Mathura violence in which 24 people including two police officers, were killed.

“Despite being a green belt area, how was permission given for agitation? How food items were allowed to reach there? Why police was not allowed to fire at encroachers despite knowing there were arms and ammunition inside,” he asked.

Training his guns at senior state minister Shivpal Yadav, who is also brother of SP Chief Mulayam Singh Yadav, the BJP leader said the state government was trying to shield the perpetrators of the Mathura violence.

“Shivpal Yadav must resign and if he doesn’t, he should be sacked,” he said.

BJP president Amit Shah had on Saturday said that if Mulayam Singh Yadav had self-respect, he should immediately seek resignation of Shivpal Yadav.
