Monterry (Mexico) July 23 (IANS) Mexican club Tigres UANL advanced to the final of South America’s premier football competition Copa Libertadores securing a 4-3 aggregate victory in their semi-final against Brazilian outfit Internacional.
Tigres on Wednesday won the second leg at the Estadio Universitario 3-1 after losing last week’s match in Porto Alegre 1-2, Xinhua reported.
Andre-Pierre Gignac opened the scoring in the 18th minute before Geferson turned the ball into his own net to make it 2-0 on the stroke of half-time. Egidio Arevalo Rios further extended the hosts’ lead with a header just before the hour mark.
Tigres were forced to endure a tense final few minutes when Lisandro Lopez struck for the visitors in the 89th minute. Another goal for Internacional would have seen them through to the final by virtue of scoring more away goals.
The Monterrey-based club will face Argentina’s River Plate in the final over two legs on July 29 and August 5.
