Minister Pramod Madhwaraj Inaugurates Matsyotsava at Pilikula

Mangaluru: The Fisheries Department in association with Fisheries Development Board and Dr Shivaram Karantha Nisargadhama jointly organized “Matsyotsava at Pilikula Nisargadhama Moodshedde here on July 16.

The Minister for Youth Services Department, Fisheries from Animal Husbandry and Fisheries Pramod Madhwaraj inaugurated the programme.

Addressing the gathering Minister Pramod said, “For the development of Fisheries in Pilikula the state government has approved a project worth Rs 20 crore out of which Rs 10 crore has already been sanctioned. Fish is highly nutritious food and provides a range of health benefits. Fish is good for the heart and during pregnancy, women should consume fish. Fish is 100% pure without pesticides. In the coastal area, most of the people consume fish. The government should take special care for the development of fisheries. The government is planning to start a model Matsyalaya at Pilikula.”

District Minister In-charge B Ramanath Rai also spoke on the occasion. Former minister Abhaychandra Jain requested the minister to sanction Rs 10 lakh to hold the Kambala at Pilikula.

MLA J R Lobo, Chief Whip Ivan D’Souza, ZP President Meenakshi Shanthigodu, Director of Pilikula Nisargadhama Jayaprakash Bhandary, CEO of Pilikula Nisargadhama Prasanna Kumar and others were also present.

    and check out the extremely bad state of the main
    roads all around – this happens every year during the
    monsoon season – wonder why concrete roads have
    never been given a thought!

  2. I wholeheartedly support the project and the concept.

    Although this project may not be about fish farming, I have been great believer in fish farming.

    Fish farming must be taken up in a big way in the coastal districts. It can provide good revenue.

    Of course, with anything connected to farming, fish too can be affected by diseases. So, I suppose people must obtain sufficient training in how to deal with all the pros and cons of fish farming.

    I do not know if I would agree with the statement of the minister: “Fish is 100% pure without pesticides”.

    Much fish has disappeared from local steams in Mangalore due to the over-use of pesticides. The large quantities used in farming most likely to kill the fish.

    Fish consumes anything that is available to them including metals in water, discharged from the factories. The Minamata case is a well-known case.
