Modi Greatest Contribution of Ganiga Community – MLC Poojary

Kundapur: MLC Kota Srinivas Poojary said here on Wednesday that usually when a community was spoken of, a question could be asked about the personalities contributed by it to higher levels.

In this respect, if anyone sought to know of the contribution of the Ganiga community, it could be proudly said that it had given a powerful prime minister to the nation in the form of Narendra Modi, he opined.

He was speaking on the occasion of the dedication of the renovated Shri Vyasaraj Math premises here. A large number of community leaders were present.

MLA Gopal Poojary, who was the chief guest, said that it was this community which had proved that the backward classes too were capable of successfully running hospitality business in Bengaluru.

MLC Poojary’s reference was to PM Modi’s Modh Ghanchi community. Modh refers to the town Modehra, from where his caste originated.

Ghanchi is a Gujarati caste equivalent of Teli in Odisha and a few other states, Gandla in Andhra and Telangana, and Ganiga in Karnataka. It is designated under the other backward classes (OBC) category.

The name takes its origin from the traditional oil-extraction profession in which the community was engaged.
