Modi pays homage at INA memorial in Singapore

Singapore, Nov 24 (IANS) Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday paid his respects at the Indian National Army (INA) memorial marker here.

“Remembering the valiant heroes of India’s independence struggle. PM pays homage at the INA memorial marker,” external affairs ministry spokesperson Vikas Swarup tweeted.

The prime minister bowed before the photograph of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose placed at the memorial. Netaji led the INA which was dedicated to winning India’s independence from the British empire.

The INA monument was built at the Esplanade in Singapore in August 1945 before the Japanese surrender in World War II. The monument was dedicated to the unknown warriors of the INA and to the INA members who were killed in fighting in Burma, now renamed Myanmar.

According to National Heritage Board Singapore, the memorial was demolished by British forces soon after their return to Singapore. A marker is installed on the site of the former INA monument to highlight the historic events that took place on the site.
