Moodbidri: Traffic on the state highway between here and Bantwal via Taccode, Siddakatte and Loreto suddenly ground to a halt on Thursday, as all private bus staff decided to stay off roads.
It was in protest over a case of assault on a bus conductor, Yogish, by a group of four in Shantinagar colony near Pucchamogaru three days ago.
A case had been registered but the accused had not been arrested. This led to the stoppage of bus service.
Hundreds of office-goers and students and others faced hardships. The I PUC examinations were scheduled to begin on Thursday. Most of them too recourse to private vehicles which could pass unhindered. Some schools had low turnout and the examinations in such centres were cancelled.
Siddakatte town bore the most of the protest as the public gathered in large numbers. Police teams from Bantwal town, Bantwal rural and Punjalkatte stations rushed to the spot.
Following an assurance from the police to arrest the culprits within two days, the protest was withdrawn.
Late reports said that no bus operated until night.
