Mopping operation continues at Pathankot air base

Pathankot (Punjab), Jan 4 (IANS) Search and combing operation by security forces continued at the Indian Air Force (IAF) base here on Monday morning, over 52 hours after terrorists attacked the frontline air base in Pathankot town of Punjab.

NSG and Army commandos conducted a thorough mopping of the entire area where the terrorists, suspected to be from Pakistan, had been cornered, police said.

Firing could be heard during the night and Monday morning. Officials said this firing could be linked to the mopping operation.

IAF helicopters flew through the night over the air base to assist ground forces in the counter offensive against the terrorists.

Army and para-military forces have surrounded the entire air force base, which is spread in a huge area.

Four terrorists were killed by security forces on Saturday after a 15-hour long gunfight in which the NSG, Indian Army and IAF commandos were involved, assisted by IAF helicopters.

A gunfight between two more terrorists and security forces continued through Sunday.

Seven security personnel, including one official of the National Security Guard, one IAF Garud commando and five Defence Services Corps (DSC) personnel were killed in the counter-offensive against the terrorists.

“Combing operation continued (on Sunday). This operation is at the completion stage. The operation will continue till the whole air base has been cleared of any intruders,” Air Commodore J. S. Dhamoon, the Air Officer Commanding (AOC) of the Pathankot Air Force Station told the media.

Smoke could be seen coming out of the IAF air base in Pathankot, 250 km from Chandigarh, on Sunday evening as the gunfight moved to an end.

  1. From the reports that I have read, it appears that India has asked Pakistan to take action against the terrorists within 72 years. Does one think Pakistan will do anything? Nawaz Sharif is a dummy and it is Gen. Rahil Sharif who is calling the shots in Pakistan. India should have asked Pakistan to hand over the terrorists within 72 hours, failing which it will take appropriate action against her.

It appears Gen. Rahil Sharif was miffed with Narendra Modi’s visit to Lahore to meet Nawaz Sharif to wish him on his birthday, bless his would-to-be-soon married grand-daughter and take the blessings of his mother. Pakistan prides itself as a democracy, but for me it is a pseudo-democracy where the Army Chief calls the shots and Nawaz Sharif behaves like our ex-Prime Minister.

Will there be a military takeover in Pakistan and Gen. Rahil Sharif will install himself initially as a dictator and later as a self-appointed President. Anything is possible in that pariah land. In that case, it will be a repeat performance that happened during the post-Kargil period, when Gen. Pervez Musharraf took over.

Normally, in Bollywood films, we see the heroes, even the South Indian superstar, Rajnikant, included, showing their prowess in hand-to-hand combat, handling of fire arms and martial arts, etc., which would put professional black-belt holders to utter utter shame and embarrassment. Well, the Pakistani terrorist attack on Pathankot airbase was a golden opportunity for heroes like Amitabh Bacchan, his son Abhishek Bachchan, Salman Khan, Sharukh Khan and others, including Sachin Tendulkar, holding IAF’s Honorary Rank of Wing Commander, to come and fight shoulder-to-shoulder with security forces in combatting the terrorists the same way they perform their antics on the celluloid. How sad that they are nowhere to be seen. Probably, they have gone underground and will surface when the dust settles and make some rousing comments to praise the real heroes (and not the nakli or filmi heroes), the security personnel. In case of Amitabh Bachchan, people will will exduse him, because he bogged down with contractual commitments to complete the ads, so that he appears on the television.

    • Mr. Nelson, this article by Jug Suraiya is definitely worth a read.

Unlike China, India isn’t taken seriously by the world

India is busy patting itself on the back for having overtaken China as the world’s fastest growing major economy. But, for all that, China has – and will continue to have – far greater clout on the international scene than India. The world takes China seriously, and treats it with respect. The world doesn’t take India seriously, and often treats it with disrespect.

A case in point is the recent summary deportation of a number of Indian citizens – students, business travellers, tourists – by US immigration authorities. All the Indians had valid US visas, but no explanation was given by the US authorities as to why they were denied entry into that country.

What has the Indian government done about this shabby treatment of its citizens by a foreign country which, in effect, is cocking a snook at India? Nothing. Except issue a travel advisory telling Indian travellers to the US to carry with them as much documentation as possible to establish their bona fides with US officials who might otherwise send them packing back home, with no reasons given for the expulsion.

According to a TOI report, if you are an Indian going to the US – to study, do business, to visit friends and relations, or just for a holiday – you should have with you your most recent bank statement, proof of sufficient funds for the duration of your stay, your income tax returns for the last couple of years and ‘anything else which you think might be relevant to your case’. The source for the TOI report is the US department of homeland security, customs and border protection.

If Chinese citizens had been treated the way Indians have been by the US authorities, Beijing would have raised an almighty ruckus about it, and flexed its economic and political muscle, both of which are considerable. But more than anything else, China has time and again shown that it will not take lying down any disrespect of it or its citizens.

India, on the other hand, lets the world and its brother walk all over it. The Indian government hasn’t taken the matter up at the highest level with the US. Couldn’t Narendra Modi have called his pal Barak (as he likes to refer to him) and asked him what the heck was going on?

Indian-origin Americans, said to be the most prosperous of any immigrant community in America, including the Chinese community, haven’t raised a stink about the issue.

Why? Because unlike China and the Chinese we lack self-confidence regarding our international stature. It’s as though we were children in a world of grown-ups whose rules we have to obey and whom we mentally refer to as ‘Unclejis’.

And the biggest Uncleji of them all to whom we pay obeisance, is the one called Uncle Sam.

  2. Compare the Bombay Hotel Taj attack and the Pathankot Airbase attack.

Bombay did not have any intelligence warning, nor the killing of the police superintendent on the previous day of attack. Bombay is not a fortified military or air force base, but a open sea shore. Hundreds of Indian and foreign were made hostages. But the intruders were killed, Kassab was arrested, and yet, the BJP made it an issue. The then Indian Home Minister Shivraj Patil was forced to resign accusing delay, laxity and incompetence.

Now, we have a RSS and BJP government. There was 18 hours prior intelligence report and killing of police top cop. The attack was on a well fortified Air Force base. The delay is suicidal. Operation not yet complete. Why the Congress haters are still plastered lips uttering nothing.

FRIENDS, PLEASE EXPLAIN WHY HOME MINISTER RAJNATH SIGH IS INTACT. MODI IS OBLIVIOUS. WHAT HAS HAPPENED TO THE “ONLY HEROIC PATRIOTS”, THE KHAKI CHEDDIES, WHO ALWAYS BRANDED CONGRESS AS TRAITORS APPEASING THE MUSLIMS AND SIDING WITH PAKISTAN?

WE NEED THE CONGRESS, THE NEW GENERATION INDIRA GANDHI , LIKE PRIYANKA GANDHI, AND NOT ANY OTHER BAND OF HEAD LINE MANAGERS OR ORATRIX WIZARDS OR ANY ” TOM,DICK AND HARRY”! GLOBE TROTTER AND UNSOLICITED LAHORE GATE CRASHER, WHO GOES TO THE KITCHEN TO OFFER A SAREE, SHOULD BE SHAON HIS RIGHTFUL PLACE IN THE ELECTIONS TO COME. OR ELSE INDIA IS DOOMED!!

    • Mr. BN Pai,

More doublespeak by our Originaalige RampaNNA’s BoddaNNA:

WASHINGTON: The Obama administration on Monday confronted the fundamental contradiction in its increasingly tense relationship with Saudi Arabia. It could not bring itself, at least in public, to condemn the execution of a dissident cleric who challenged the royal family, for fear of undermining the fragile Saudi leadership that it desperately needs in fighting the Islamic State and ending the conflict in Syria.

The United States has usually looked the other way or issued carefully calibrated warnings in human rights reports as the Saudi royal family cracked down on dissent and free speech and allowed its elite to fund Islamic extremists. In return, Saudi Arabia became America’s most dependable filling station, a regular supplier of intelligence, and a valuable counterweight to Iran.

For years it was oil that provided the glue for a relationship between two nations that share few common values.

Now, in simple-minded and knee-jerk reaction let us see which dialogue he comes up with:

      1. The much-abused ಕಾಲ, ಸ್ತಿತಿ and ಮತಿ ಇಲ್ಲದ ಗತಿ..(or something like that). Of course, who doesn’t understand that? That has been going on since time immemorial! HOWEVER, our eulogizing and sermonizing Rampanna should stop referring to his bully Boddanna as the ‘Savior of the Universe’, the land of the FREE (that is Unless he means to say that the land ITSELF was gotten for FREE, the infrastructure built by slaves for FREE etc).

      2. Will be allege in infantile fashion by saying that my US visa was ‘rejected’?

      3. Will he allege that I do NOT know about ‘Murudeshwara’? 🙂 🙂
