Mount Carmel Central School (MCCS) -Mary Hill honors Mayor Kavitha Sanil on World Environment Day- 2017

Mangaluru: “Connecting People to Nature”, the theme for World Environment Day 2017, implores us to get outdoors and into nature, to appreciate its beauty and its importance, and to take forward the call to protect the Earth that we share.World Environment Day is the biggest annual event for positive environmental action and takes place every 5 June. World Environment Day is a day for everyone, everywhere. Since it began in 1972, global citizens have organized many thousands of events, from neighbourhood clean-ups to action against wildlife crime, to replanting forests. This year’s theme invites you to think about how we are part of nature and how intimately we depend on it. It challenges us to find fun and exciting ways to experience and cherish this vital relationship.

In recent decades, scientific advances, as well as growing environmental problems such as global warming, are helping us to understand the countless ways in which natural systems support our own prosperity and well-being. Billions of rural people around the world spend every working day ‘connected to nature’ and appreciate full well their dependence on natural water supplies and how nature provides their livelihoods in the form of fertile soil. They are among the first to suffer when ecosystems are threatened, whether by pollution, climate change or over-exploitation. Nature’s gifts are often hard to value in monetary terms. Like clean air, they are often taken for granted, at least until they become scarce.

As they say “Better late than never”, five days later, on 10th June 2017 MCCS celebrated the World Environment Day. The programme started invoking God’s blessings followed by a few cultural events on nature. Kavitha Sanil, the Mayor of Mangaluru City Corporation was the Chief Guest, while guests of honor were Sr Carrisima AC-Administrator; Sr Maria Jyothi AC- Joint Secretary; Sr Melissa AC- Principal; and K Krishnappa, an environmentalist.

On this day, an awareness programme on the importance of sustainability and on WED, for the students was shown through power point presentation; and also Initiated an undertaking from the students of this Institute for a personal challenge aimed at formulating a new habit towards creating a greener planet. Mayor Sanil was also felicitated by the school management for her elated position as Mayor, and the school is proud to have her as the parent of Prisha, a student of Class III. The Best and Healthy Contest winners who won the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place at the entire school level were awarded prizes by the Mayor. The Joint Secretary Sr. Maria Jyothi AC honoured the students who successfully nurtured the Neem saplings class wise. K Krishnappa the Environmentalist, who had lend his support throughout the year in the Green Movement hosted by the School, gave away the consolation prizes.

Addressing the gathering Mayor Kavitha said “While we are observing the World Environment Day today, but the practice should not stop this day, instead carried forward every day to see that we care for a green environment by planting trees/saplings. It is sad to note that trees are cut to give way for roads and buildings. To protect the environment, we need to keep our surroundings clean. People of Mangaluru should join in the Swachh Mangaluru campaign in keeping the city clean. We should also think of rainwater harvesting, and not waste water when not needed. We all can make a difference in the society by working together to have a clean and green environment. Children start planting a tree today”

At the end, the principal Sr. Melissa congratulated the efforts of the members of Young Global Citizen’s Club for hosting a very meaningful programme on the occasion and thanked everyone for their cooperation in making the school’s mega Neem Tree project – 2016, a grand success. The students throughout the programme were made aware of the need to take care of the environment and the environment in return would take care of us. The programme was compered by Shaima Zubaida of Class X and Prithika of Class IX. Carol D’Souza of Class VIII welcomed the gathering and Larrel Coutinho of Class IX proposed the vote of thanks.

In conclusion, it is nice to note that World Environment Day (WED) which is United Nations’ principal vehicle for encouraging worldwide awareness and action for the environment is supported by schools like Mount Carmel Central School. By observing WED, it will like a ‘people’s day’ for doing something positive for the environment, galvanizing individual actions into a collective power that generates an exponentially positive impact on the planet. The year’s WED theme is aimed at the well-being of humanity, the environment, and the functioning of the economy, ultimately depend upon the responsible management of the planet’s natural resources.Every Action Counts- WED is the opportunity for everyone to realize the responsibility to care for the Earth and to become agents of change. Let’s do it for the betterment of the environment.
