Mumbai: Church demands ban on play for hurting religious sentiments

Mumbai (PTI): Catholic Church in India has demanded ban on the play ‘Agnes of God’, an adaptation of American playwright John Pielmeier’s drama about a nun giving birth to a dead child, alleging it is a “wrongful portrayal” of priests and nuns committed to a life of celibacy and hurts the sentiments of the Christians.

According to the Catholic Bishops Conference of India (CBCI), the play “is the wrongful portrayal of the character of lakhs of clergy, who are committed to a life of celibacy”.

“We have written to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and also other Chief Ministers to ban the play as it hurts religious sentiments,” Catholic Secular Forum (CSF) general secretary Joseph Dias told PTI here today.

He, however, said the CSF has no plan to obstruct the upcoming performance of the play in Mumbai.

“There is no question of halting that performance as it is to be staged before an invited audience at the National Centre for the Performing Arts (NCPA, though it was originally planned at Sophia hall,” Dias said.

“The play has been made by a group whose earlier work was ‘Vagina Monologues’. They are not Christians and they did not involve or consult the Church. The play questions the sacrifice of nuns. Now, they will sell the tickets for hundreds of rupees,” Dias said.

The CBCI, the body of Catholic bishops in the country, has written to Union Home Ministry seeking a countrywide ban on the play holding that it was “misrepresentation of the religious belief of the Christian community”.

“The reason why the Catholic Church is against such a play is that it is the wrongful portrayal of the character of lakhs of our clergy, who are committed to a life of celibacy,” the CBCI letter said.

Director of the play, Kaizaad Kotwal, has approached police to pursue his plea seeking protection for himself and the lead cast including thespian actor Mahabanoo Mody-Kotwal.

The play is an adaptation of a 1982 Broadway production by Pielmeier, reportedly based on a true incident in the US, narrating the story of a novice nun who gives birth and insists that the child was the result of a virgin conception.

  1. Let’s sit back and wait for the responses from fake-secular groups and individuals on this controversy. Remember, they were too quick to comment on ‘PK’ controversy taking sides and branding those who opposed the movie as ‘right-wing, militant-hindu’ groups!! Also, one should remember how the same groups were hiding under the table when the cartoon controversy broke out. As I have repeatedly said on this forum, fake-secular and anti-sanaathana groups are totally dishonest and they lack moral courage to stand up for right things. Their selective outrage and double-standards were probably the single most important factor behind the rise of BJP to power.

Also, one should look at the people behind this play. From MF Hussain, Aaamir Khaan to Kaisaad Kotwaala, they seem to be very good in using democratic setup to selectively offend religions. I wonder why they couldn’t show a little bit of courage to go after peaceful folks? smiles…

Let’s see if we get any honest responses from Joker, AS Mathew, Manga, Roy, Priest, Lawrence or one of those ‘brave’ individuals!! LOL

You mean, like your Obama is leading from the BACK in Syria/Iraq?

What happened to that “shock & awe” war-cry? Just look at the unholy mess that is unfolding out there in the greater Levant. And our Messiah Rampu is focused on the Gold smuggling at MIA, aadu jeevitham, mooka praanis and cartoons!

Lol! You sure wonder too much, don’t you?

And, have you WONDERED as to why your Boddanna didn’t go after the country (Hint: ಆಡು ಜೀವಿತಂ) which had the highest number of terrorists behind 9/11? Surely, even a Rampa would know which side their bread is buttered, right?

Tell you what ya Rampa. Just stick to doing what you do best – copy pasting details of some idiots who are apprehended smuggling ಚಿನ್ನ at ಮಂಗಳೂರು ವಿಮಾನ ನಿಲ್ಧಾನ.

      ಗುಡ್ ಲಕ್. 🙂

In a twist to the original Kannada folktale about the pious cow Punyakoti, a remorseful tiger takes an oath that “consumption of cow’s meat is a bad thought. Henceforth, I will not eat cow’s meat.” This is an ending entirely different from the original Kannada version. There, the tiger jumps off a cliff.

“Indian system views time in a cyclic manner. This is also called Kalachakra. There is no end in sight for kalachakra. After one rotation of this chakra is completed, the second one starts. The completion of one cycle is called yuga. In this way, history is narrated as tretayuga, dwaparayuga etc.”

“What we know today as the motorcar existed during the Vedic period. It was called anashva rath. Usually a rath (chariot) is pulled by horses but an anashva rath means one that runs without horses or yantra-rath, what is today a motorcar. The Rig Veda refers to this…”

“We know that television was invented by a priest from Scotland called John Logie Baird in 1926. But we want to take you to an even older Doordarshan… Indian rishis using their yog vidya would attain divya drishti. There is no doubt that the invention of television goes back to this… In Mahabharata, Sanjaya sitting inside a palace in Hastinapur and using his divya shakti would give a live telecast of the battle of Mahabharata… to the blind Dhritarashtra.”

The poor Tiger in the Punyakoti story! My heart goes out to him. Did he start eating Avocados, Cabbage and Lettuce? Or, did he say NO to ONLY beef? Can we have a LIVE TELECAST on this, plz? Or, is this the RIGHT kalachakra to ask this of thee?

Err, Herr Rampa…. would you like to comment on this, please?

      • As expected, most of the self-haters are fully silent on this controversy silently endorsing a ban on this play!! Our friend joker Pinto attempts to respond but fails as usual. Not even a single word on main topic, instead he brings up some obscure punyakoti reference. Why so dumb? To much beef consumption? smiles…

Band? Which band, ya Rampa? Oh yeah, Dire Straits used to be pretty good. Have they disbanded now? But then, one does get to hear some occasional songs from Mark Knopfler. Do they plan a reunion soon? Will it be held at ‘Maddyson’ square? Will you be banging on your beloved Mridangam? Will you be posting videos on youtube? Gosh! this is so exciting! RAMPA IN DIRE STRAITS! Hmmmm…. it sure has a nice ring to it. 🙂

Oops….. silly me! You were talking about some “ban” and not “Band”!

Ban? What ban? All I know is that Beef is banned in certain states in India. And just recently, a man lost his life because some Chaddi’s thought he had tied-up some blessed ‘Punyakoti’ in his Fridge and his BBQ grill was on.

In India, just about anything can be banned. If somebody doesn’t like the polka dots on my inner-wear, kalas, they move the authorities and my ‘polkies’ gets banned. If somebody doesn’t like the Music I play and somebody complains, that gets promptly banned too! If my Rooster wakes up the neighborhood in the morning, and some Rampa complains… kalas…. the poor Rooster gets taken away by the Municipal authorities!

What do you think our Pradhana Sevaka meant when he said – “Earlier there was a time when you were ASHAMED to be born Indians”! And poor simple-minded folks (Rampa’s like you) – you promptly did ‘padhrad’ to ಫೋರೀನ್ and are now whingeing and whining at anything & everything (Pradhana Sevaka Excluded) about India.

Tell you what ya Rampa…. Bans themselves must be banned!

          • Your silly posts and incoherent thoughts continue to prove why you are not a ‘praveena’ in any of the topics discussed here!! LOL So, do you have anything to say about this play controversy? Are you for the ban or against it? Let’s see if you can answer this simple question without getting yourself lost in another round of gibberish!

  2. play ‘Agnes of God’, an adaptation of American playwright John Pielmeier’s drama …..

Why can’t they go and protest in front of White House and request Obama to ban this play.

    • Why can’t they go and protest in front of White House and request Obama to ban this play. – Mr. Krishna

Hey! That’s a brilliant suggestion! And we can take it further too! All the Indians in the USA can protest in front of the White House & KINDLY REQUEST Obama to ban beef too! 🙂

  3. There are hundreds of Indians In Europe and America why they Can not demand ban on cow slaughter. in a democratic country every one has right to protest if they feel there are some injustice is done to them. This group only protest and don’t go kill a man on false allegations. It is not a good trend for any body to purposely offend any religion. World admires Indians because of unity irrespective of many religion, cast, region.

    • Arthur Ronald D’Souza,
Why are you bringing up ‘beef’ issue in response to a controversy over a play? Do you have anything to say on this controversy? Do you want to ban this play or do you support the director’s right to go ahead with this play? Let’s see where you stand on the ‘honesty’ scale!! smiles…

      • Why are you bringing up ‘beef’ issue in response to a controversy over a play? – RampaNNA to AR D’souza

Because, the common denominator is the BAN. And now, I’m not too much for bans in the first place, if truth be told! AND PLEASE don’t make another Rampa out of yourself (if such can be made).

You know what I mean. I referred to your blessed ‘Punyakoti’ in a different context in some other post! And YOU called it as “unknown”.

So some known UNKNOWN’S from the Chaddi Balaga want to create a ruckus over some well-known UNKNOWN Cowwaaa? uh Duh! Man! ARE you for REAL?

        • “Because the common denominator is the BAN” writes joer Praveena Pinto from his anganawaadi classroom!

Really? If so, how come you couldn’t see the ‘common denominator’ in the mangaluru vimaana nildaana incidents even after I repeatedly pointed it out? See, this is why you are the joke and joker!

  4. I do not understand one thing: how can a play hurt religious sentiments if one does not want to see the drama – need not .

Those who care to spend their dime can do so. I believe the religious leaders should be more concerned about harassments of nuns whenever there is injustice . Keeping quiet and not reporting the incidents create confusion and cause more harm to the religious sentiments of the people who follow the teachings of Christ.

Many Dramas will come and go. Dramas do not necessarily hurt the sentiments. I would rather protest against the protest by the CBCI and other groups who ought to focus on genuine issues and not trivial like these.

  5. People please don’t comment on some trying to stir up trouble. Just let them struggle to answer thier own question. Those who have nothing much to do in this area but put his nose.just ignore. Best thing is first at the source where you can help to ban this movie.
