Mumbai: Chatrapati Shivaji awardee, Kannadiga Yermalu Rohit Hegde has been appointed as the Assistant Commissioner of Customs Mumbai by the Maharashtra government.

In the year 1980, he became a customs officer in Mumbai. He was serving at the Nava Sheva port in Mumbai. He has also served at Mumbai airport, cargo and Mumbai port as the customs superintendent.

Son of late Chittaranjan Das Hegde from Sanoor and Gutthu Tara C Hegde from Katapady Yenagudde, he completed his high school education in Adamaru Poornaprajna School and his degree from Govinda Das College, Surathkal. During his school days, he has represented India and was a national champion in Athletics. He has been awarded the Chatrapati Shivaji award for his achievements in sports. He also received the highest customs degree.

He is a lover of Kambala and has promoted the rural sport from the last 20 years being the president of Katapady Kambala Samiti. He has also served as the president of Uchila Ganeshotsav Samiti and president of Yermalu Janardhan Brahma Kalasha Samiti.
