Myanmar parliament forms reviewing commission

Nay Pyi Taw, Feb 5 (IANS) Myanmar’s newly-elected parliament’s House of Representatives (lower house) on Friday formed a 23-member reviewing commission on legal affairs and special cases during its ongoing first session.

The 15-member Bill Committee and Public Accounts Committee of the house was constituted on Thursday. The term of the committees is five years, Xinhua news agency reported.

The new parliament started its first sessions with the House of Representatives, of which U Win Myint of the ruling National League for Democracy (NLD) was elected the speaker and U Ti Khun Myat of the Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP) as the deputy speaker. The NLD’s U Mann Win Khaing Than was elected the speaker of the House of Nationalities (upper house) and U Aye Tha Aung of the Arakan National Party (ANP) as its deputy speaker.

The first session of the two new houses came nearly three months after the end of the general election on November 8, 2015, in which the NLD, led by Aung San Suu Kyi, won the absolute majority of the parliamentary seats.

Following the sessions of the two Houses, the first session of the regional or state parliaments are set to begin next Monday.
