Mulki: Two workers died as a well was being sunk in a private property near the Haleyangadi junction on Tuesday, May 1 morning.

Syed and Madarappa were engaged in the work of digging the well along with others. Rains that hit the region during the last week are said to have resulted in turning the earth loose.

The well had already been sunk up to 20 ft. Around 10 am, all of a sudden the loose earth caved in right into the bottom surface where the workers were digging.

While a few others escaped to safety by climbing up, the two ill-fated workers were buried alive. Inspector Basheer Ahmed and team rushed from Mulki police station and took up rescue operation. By noon, the bodies are said to have been retrieved.

The curious crowds that gathered created additional problem for the police and also hampered rescue operation.
