Puttur: The Uppinangady police had arrested Vasant Poojary of Montetadka in Shibaje village of Beltangady taluk on Thursday, June 14 morning in connection with the theft of latex rubber sheets from the house belonging to M T Ulahanan in Bengala, Shibaje.

Since, during interrogation, Poojary confessed to having sold the stolen goods to one Abbas, a trader from Arasinamakki, the police took him in his vehicle to Abbas' shop. After seizing the goods, they were taking him to the house where he had stolen them from for 'mahazar' procedure.

Poojary, excusing himself to answer the nature's call, is said to have escaped from the custody, when the vehicle was stopped at his request.

After the police alerted the public, they helped to capture him near a shop about a kilometre away.
