Mysore: In a shocking incident, Manikantha (26), a police constable in the district armed reserve, shot himself dead with his service rifle while on security duty at the deputy commissioner's residence in Chamarajnagar around Friday, June 15 noon.

Despair in love is said to be the motive for his act. He, a resident of Belavadi in Gundlupet of Chamarajanagar district, hailed from Dasa Banajiga community and was in love with Pallavi from Madivala community.

He had just come to know that her parents had decided on getting her married to a boy from their own community. In a momentary response, he is said to have taken the rash step while being on duty, by shooting himself dead with the service rifle.

He had been posted on security at the official residence of the district magistrate and deputy commissioner, which is located on court road. Superintendent of police Rajendra Prasad, deputy commissioner K R Sundar and other officials rushed to the spot immediately and studied the case.
