| Team Mangalorean - Sullia from Shreyas Nadubail
Sullia: Sachin Shetty of Kasaragod, who was the second accused in the 2008 murder of planter Meera Balakrishna of Aivarnad near here has been arrested by the police from near his hometown.
The police, on receiving a lead that preparations were being made for his marriage, were confident that he would visit the house of his relatives and kept surveillance over a limited houses.
Although his engagement had taken place earlier, as soon as his hand in the murder got publicity, the marriage was postponed. He kept roaming around in Kasaragod for two days, but he was even planning to go underground. But the police got the better of him and nabbed him before he could vanish.
Sachin Shetty ran a fancy goods shop on Molahalli Shiva Rao (Junior College) road here for some years. After suffering losses, he had left town and after returning again, he roamed around without work. It was at this point that he got trapped in the plot to murder of Meera Balakrishna, the sole motive being mone.
After the murder, Sachin had been absconding for about two years. But once the investigation went off track, with suspicions going in different directions, he is said to have felt safe and returned here. He got involved in some land deals for some time. But when the police began a huntdown on real culprits, he vanished again.
Accused no. 3, 4, 5 and 6, namely Shivaraj, Mahaveer, Ravi Poojary adn Deviprasad have already been arrested. The arrest of accused no. 2, i.e., Sachin Shetty, leaves only the main accused Roshan to be nabbed.
