Mangalore: Obviously embarrassed by the media enquiries regarding some raids conducted by the MCC officials, to respond to which she hardly had any information to offer, city mayor Gulzar Banu has now instructed the MCC commissioner to keep her informed in advance about raids.
A few days ago, raids were conducted on unauthorized abattoirs in Kudroli where animals, meat and hide were found and seized. The animals were later released by the mayor after levying a fine of Rs 2,000.
In the second instance, the commissioner ensured that the animals were auctioned immediately so that there would not be any interference from anyone. Besides, raids were conducted on various establishments to verify commercial registration documents. In the light of these instances, the mayor has instructed the commissioner by way of a memo saying that she be informed before any raids are held.
Speaking to Mangalorean.com, sources at MCC said on Saturday that nowhere in the rules and regulations governing the civic bodies has it been specified that the permission of the elected representatives must be obtained before conducting the raids. The officials have been invested with the powers on their own, and hence it was not correct to say that the elected representatives should be informed about such actions. |
