Mangalore: The DK district unit of Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) has appealed to the deputy commissioner to ensure peace and harmony in the district during the forthcoming fasting month of Ramadan.
On Wednesday, a delegation of SDPI, led by district president Abdul Jaleel K, submitted a memorandum at the DC's office, which was received by the additional deputy commissioner. It commended the district administration and the district police for its bold steps in maintaining communal harmony during recent days.
It added that vested interests who could not tolerate a peaceful atmosphere had been making attempts at harming the harmony currently prevailing. The district, known as an abode of intelligent people, had fallen victim to communal flare-up many times in the past years, resulting in loss to human life and property.
Further, the SDPI pointed out that many disturbances had taken place during the holy month of Ramadan in the past. During this month, Muslims visit mosques early in the morning and late in the evening. They also keep moving around town in large numbers for the purpose of purchase of clothings and other commodities needed for the festive occasion. The memorandum demanded that the community be given suitable security and protection at that time.
Mangalore constituency committee president Nawaz Ullal and others were present in the delegation. |
