Mangalore: A native fishing boat named Parh-annoor owned by T P Sadiq of Hoige Bazar capsized near the estuary here around Sunday noon. While the entire catch and the set of nets on board went down into the sea, its crew made of four was saved by other fishing boats.

They had left Kasba Bengre on Saturday afternoon. While returning with happy faces about the big catch, it is said to have got grounded in the silt and sand dunes in the shallow waters. It went out of balance and capsized.

Two of those on board were swimming and they were pulled ashore to safety with ropes by locals. The other two were rescued by another boat.

Two engines, fish of value of Rs 50,000 and nets were lost in the sea. However, the crew was relieved that they remained safe.

The fishing community complains that the dredging work was not being done properly, but only as an eyewash. They say that the government officials were least bothered about the safety and lives of the fishermen.
