Mangalore: Mohammed (42), an Indonesian national and captain of a cargo ship sailing from Singapore on its way to Dubai fell ill off Mangalore port. He was brought ashore by special arrangement and admitted to a private hospital here. But his life could not be saved.

He was reportedly suffering from high diabetes. When he was indisposed while in transit, the nearest port being Mangalore was contacted.

On Saturday, the port personnel went to the ship by a motor launch and brought Mohammed ashore and admitted him to the hospital. He died on Sunday, August 19.

His mortal remains have been kept in the hospital mortuary. Since it was not a scheduled call of the ship at the port and since the captain was brought ashore on an emergency basis and humanitarian grounds, the procedure of repatriating the body could take longer time and additional paper-work, said the hospital sources.
