Mangalore Sept 8: The Feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary was celebrated with great devotion and joy in St. John the Baptist Church, Permude.
The feast was as usual preceded by a devotion of nine days, during which a large number of children brought flower offerings to the Blessed mother.
On the feast day the new corn was blessed at the premises of the nearby school followed by a procession to the church. Rev. Fr. John Fernandes of Mangalore Universaity's Chair of Christianity along with other three priests officiated at the celebrations.
In his message Fr. Fernandes stressed on everyone's duty to preserve ecology and to save the earth as God has given it to us. Man is not the owner, but a caretaker of the earth, he stressed.
At the end of the Church service, sugar cane was given to everyone of the people who took part in the feast.

| The message of Fr John Fernandes given at the feast celebration is very timely and appropriate. 'Man does not own the earth, but he is only a temporary tenant' -- has a powerful warning to all those who exploit its resourses to the detriment of ecology. Viewed in the context of the way the promoters of MSEZ and their unscrupulous agents terrorise the hapless dwellers in the locality, this message has great significance. In order to gain some commission or profit at the expense of the poor farmers of the land, these people have flouted every law and committed innumerable attrocities. Without mincing words, Fr Fernandes called it a SIN against God and His creation. Well said, Fr. Fernandes. Thank you very much. |
