MANGALORE, May 28, 2010:  The Air India hired law company Mulla and Mulla, Clarigie, Blunt and Caroe a Mumbai based law arbitrator today descended into Mangalore for disbursing compensation to the families of the deceased in the IX 812 plane crash in Bajpe near here last week.

The team of three lawyers from the firm headed by one of the top air crash law expert Mr. H.D. Nanavati today recieved claim forms along with several other documents from the families in a process to give them compensation. At 11pm on Friday the firm had given six families a total of Rs. 50 lakh compensation as an interim arrangement.

According to the Executive Director of the Air India (Finance) Mr. S. Kundra this was just an interim compensation as per the direction of the Civil Aviation Ministry and the Board of the Air India, we have a long process to take up before we arrived at the final compensation package.

Those families that received the compensation today included The families that got the compensation included that of Irshad Ahmed, Melwyn  Kiran  Menezes, Rama Sathish, Reshma Santhosh Rai, Nalanda Shravan and Viha Santhosh Rai. Those below 12 years of age was given a compensation of Rs. 5 lakhs while those above were given 10 lakhs. According to an official of the Air India Mr. Sunil Kishan the Air India compensation which was being negotiating by the law firm was nothing but an interim order but the final compensation would be much bigger.

He said the families have been asked to bring all their credentials that proves their relation to the victims of the air crash including death certificate, birth certificate, ration card, driving licence, passports that shows some relation with the victim.

Though initially there was a widespread confusion prevailing in the venue (hotel ocean pearl) in knowing the procedure to claim the compensation, due to the intervention of the Air India officials the confusion was clarified and things went on smoothly.  But many relatives had disputed their claims following multiple claims, but the law firm was firm on receiving the right papers before it cleared the claim.

Air India had sent intimation to only 53 families to be present at the venue of the negotiations, but over 70 families turned in plunging the process into a big confusion.

The negotiatiations will continue on 29th May (Saturday also) when the AI officials plan to continue to disburse compensation to the families of the victims. Mr. Kundra said the officials will keep visiting Mangalore and hold compensation meetings in the city till the last family of the victims got their due compensation.

Air India should see that, all the money should reach the victims kins. No mediators or these currupt officers should allow to make money out it. Some people in the government departments dont hesitate to take bribe even from dead body.

So please one transparent officer should handle it. And secrecy should be maintained.

The list of the dead is out so there is no need to be discreet -Goondas will know any how

These days of Gangs demanding money from people, it is dangerous to publicise the names of family members who received the initial token compensation from AI.
Raj Hegde appears to have commented rightly.
But how will the public or close relatives of deceased know that the Air India is working fast in dealing with the matter as we have preconceived judgment that n government agency pays compensations as promised and without delay?
There is a history that the Govt officials never paid even the small amount of pension to freedom fighters, retired teachers, widows without supporting family members....
Probably to prove that AI settles compensations fast, they might have given publicity!!

I too agree with K. Shankara Bhat's opinion. We the people need transparency. I completely agree that money will not compensate for the loss of life, but we should not bee hoodwinked by these corporations who have a PR team to write up a fantastic Eulogy and route the insured money to their pockets. The corporations have to pay the price and feel the pinch, if not in life at least in terms of money.
I might sound money minded but a family who has lost a valuable member, on the long run they need money to sustain. We all know our govt. and the majority, we will forget this very fast and it will end up as a mere statistic. The families have to be compensated, their future has been affected as well.

I agree with Dr Raj. Everyone knows that Air India will give the compensation. But my request, please do not publish photo's while they receive the check. But we catholic, please keep this situation in low profile.

Dr. Raj and K S Bhat, more than anything it is now a security issue. Forget outsiders, at times of tragedy relatives too try to take advantage. Yeh duniya ek zaalim cheez hai saab.

Dr Raj Hegde, Australia, “I think Media should respect privacy and confidentiality in these matters. Relatives have lost precious lives. No amount of money could compensate a life.
-------------------- UNQUOTE ------------------------------------------------------------

I agree with our learned Dr Raj Hegde, Australia that media has a moral obligation to the society to respect privacy and confidentiality of relatives who have lost precious lives an no amount of money could compensate a life.. However, I want to add that as happened in Bhopal Gas tragedy case, our Indian govt bodies & their corrupt babus are quite notorious in hushing up the matters and getting away the responsibility of awarding a fair compensation to victims by striking underhand [kick-back] deals with MNC’s. I have not come across any case where our Govt’s has given justice to victims on its own without media pressure, that is the track-record that we have. Even for small amount of spot-compensation, this Air India / Indian Airlines are not liberal; for example, I have not yet received the just taxi fare compensation of approx. AED 200/- [approx. Rs. 2,500] for the IA flight from Dubai to India delayed by approx. 24 hrs and after an year, I stopped pursuing with them, as it would cost me more to pursue my claim with them. But I will not forget this callous attitude of Indian Govt Airlines throughout my life time and also which pass it on to others whom I know. This is how Indian Govt Airline earns bad image every day and hence it is in huge losses; Penny-wise, pound foolish.

In the present case of M’lore Air crash, there is every chance that AI MD or his legal team get a hidden kick back from the re-insurers in UK, money may go to Swiss bank a/c like it happened after Bhopal Gas tragedy, by Cong-I Govt headed by Rajiv Gandhi striking underhand deals, getting it vetted by Supreme Court too, as I remember & pre-empting the potential claims by victims against the killer Union Carbide,

So media has to act as a watch-dog without disrespecting privacy and confidentiality of relatives.
