Mangalore, Apr 27: The Chief Minister’s Gold Medal was awarded to Mangalorean Doctor, Prof (Dr) Nidarsh D. Hegde on 20 April, 2011 in Bangalore by the Chief Minister of Karnataka. The District Administration and the District Minister have acknowledged with appreciation the work of Dr. Nidarsh D. Hegde, Commandant of Home Guards, Dakshina Kannada District, who, after taking charge of the office has been actively involved in the activities of the department. He has brought about many visible changes to the Home Guards Unit and has taken keen interest in recruiting Home Guards in the District.   After his appointment to office, the strength of the Home Guards has increased from 1000 to 1500.

The District Administration and the District Minister also appreciated the cooperation extended by the Commandant Home Guards in providing maximum security for all Law and Order, Bandobast and Election Duties so far, after he took over as Commandant of Home Guards, Dakshina Kannada District.
 
For the first time, the District Commissioner also acknowledged the presence of 700 Home Guards deployed for Lok Sabha Elections in 2009 in Dakshina Kannada District which was the maximum deployment in any election duty since the inception of Home Guards Organization in Dakshina Kannada District.
 
The District Administration also appreciated the important role played by the Commandant of Home Guards and the Home Guards in the rescue and relief operations in Air India Express Plane crash near Bajpe Airport.
 
After Prof. (Dr.) Nidarsh D. Hegde took over as Commandant of Home Guards, Dakshina Kannada District, the Home Guards are deployed (working) in various govt and private departments in Dakshina Kannada District throughout the year. Under his guidance for the first time, the Western Range Home Guards have won the Men`s Individual Championship, the Women`s Individual Championship and the Overall Championship in the Athletic Meet where all the Home Guards and firemen of the state participated.
 
Prof. (Dr.) Nidarsh D. Hegde is Professor at A.B. Shetty Memorial Institute of Dental Sciences. His wife is Prof. (Dr.) Mithra N. Hegde, who is the Personal Dentist to Her Excellency, The President of India and also a recipient of The Karnataka Kannada Rajyotsava Award in the field of Medicine.
