Heading towards modernization, some arts go unrecognized and a few rituals and practices tend to go into oblivion. In an attempt towards innovation, new art-forms spout and new talents crop up with a Western touch. More and more people seem to lose their belief and interest in those ancient rituals, which were followed by our ancestors. People get no time to follow such rituals as they are being influenced by science and technology of the present generation. But, there are arts that never go unrecognized and there are rituals and practices that are still followed with great ardour, even in this 21st century. One such art is ‘Yakshagana’ which is popular in the districts of Uttara Kannada, Udupi, Dakshina Kannada, Shimoga and Kasaragod. A ritual related to Yakshagana that is still followed is ‘Harake aata’, aYakshagana show by a certain troupe or mela being sponsored by a devotee in fulfilment of a vow. The admittance is free to the public.

Yakshagana is not only played for entertainment; it is more often played to express the devotion and to give message of Ramayana, Mahabharata and other holy books. Nowadays, it is very common to come across ‘Harake aata’ being offered in thanksgiving to one's deity for fulfilling one's wish or for having granted a favour. The best example for the people’s belief being strong towards ‘Harake aata’ and the valuing the art to the core is ‘Kateel Sri Durga Parameshwari Prasadita Dashavatara YakshaganaMandali’, which has a history of 60 years and that has their play fully booked for another 15 years, with a long waiting list. ‘Kateel Sri Durga Parameshwari Prasadita Dashavatara Yakshagana Mandali’ was founded with a single troupe of artistes. It has now grown into 5 troupes covering the ‘Harake aata’ booked by devotees every year. Yet, they are still unable to cover the pending bookings, since as the old ones are done, new bookings keep adding on to the list. Every troupe of artistes, which is known as ‘mela’, comprises around 40 to 50 artistes with a chief ‘Bhagavata’, the one carries out the whole play with his background voice and he is the one who chooses artistes based on their suitability for each role. Accompanying them are another ‘Bhagavata’ and a manager. The 5th mela’s Bhagavata Satish Shetty Patla says, though the Mandali has 5 melas in it, by performing 'Harake aata' at various places at a time to cover the bookings, only 180 shows can be performed by each mela over a complete six-month period, which totals to 900 shows. Every year there will be over 1000 bookings for the play, out of which up to 500 are permanent bookings of the devotees who offer ‘Harake aata’ every year.
He said that the troupe gets more bookings to perform that has enabled the Mandali grow from one mela to 5 melas. But only because of non-availability of artistes it is still working with 5 melas over the past two years. In ‘Harake aata’, prasangas (episodes) like ‘Devi Mahatme’, 'Kateelu Kshetra Mahatme', 'Sridevi Lalitopadhyana', 'Gayatri Mahatme' and many others from Bhagavad Gita, Ramayana and Mahabharata are performed. Among them higher preference is found for ‘Devi Mahatme’ story that speaks about Goddess Durga Parameshwari’s beauty and strength, since she is the family deity for a very large number of people in the undivided Dakshina Kannada district and elsewhere. To book a show, a devotee has to pay Rs 18,000 to 20,000 as mela’s ‘Veelya’ - a kind of earnest money payment - and the rest of the arrangements like stage settings, audience set-up and prasadam arrangement will be done according to the devotees' capability in terms of money. Shows are held from November until the following May. In the rainy season, no plays will be performed as it is a time-honoured ritual followed by the artistes to take their anklets off on a certain day in May, called 'Pattanaje'. Devotees' belief in Goddess Devi Durga's strength is such that the artiste who plays Durga Devi’s role himself will be treated like God and given money as if an offering to God. The artiste who plays the role of Devi Durga also has to follow certain rules of abstinence, as has been followed from the olden times, like staying away from non-vegetarian food and alcohol during the six months of performance. Prashant Shetty Nelyadi, the artiste who plays Devi Durga's role in the 5th mela of the Mandali says, “It is through Devi Durga’s blessings that I have got an opportunity to play her role in Yakshagana. My mother, who was keeping ill health for years, is now in good health ever since I started playing Devi’s role. I indeed feel blessed with this role to play and we have not come across any loopholes in the management of the Bhagavata” Along with the arrangements by Mandali themselves for the costumes and ornaments of the role requirements, devotees have also offered gold and silver crown and ornaments for Devi and the same is used during the show. People from far and near throng to witness the ‘Harake aata’ again and again and feel blessed with it. | |

| Thanks for the report. Krishna and Prabhu have nicely captured the other aspects. Being a fan of yakshagaana and Thalamaddale, I find the success of 'harake aata' very encouraging. Late 80s and early 90s saw the golden era of 'thaalamaddale'. How can we forget those great talents - Sheni Goapala Krishna Bhatta, Samaga, Kumble Sundara Rao, Prabhakara Joshi, Vitla Shambu Sharma, Kolyuru Ramachandra Rao...!! wow - what a great time it was!! |

Thanks for the very Good Article by Ms Ramya B N.
In the past there were plenty of Melas existed in our twin districts. Out of them majority of the Melas were conducting commercial shows with some nominal entry fee. The Kateel and Dhrmastala Melas were known for only Harake Ata.
Over a period of time due to the lack artists’ and increased maintenance cost, the commercial Mela operation became a non viable project. These days we do not see any commercial Melas and ‘Tent Ata’ has become historic totally vanished from our culture.
Fortunately we are very lucky to maintain this great Yakshgana art because of the strong demand for Harake Ata performed by Kateel and Dhrmastala Melas. Otherwise Yakshgana Art would have totally disappeared from our culture.
I remember a few famous artists, like Sri Shreni, Keremane Mahabala Hegde, Shambu Hegde, Aruva Narayan Shetty and the famous comedian Mijar Annappa. Prof Prabhakar Joshi is famous for his Yakshgana dialogues. I believe the Tala Maddale is held very frequently in the outskirts of few temples almost throughout the year.
The sad thing about Ata is it is dying art. Now a day’s very few people from the younger generation will pursue career as a Yakasgana Artist. In the past majority of the Artist were from Agricultural family. Most of the artists were performing this art with true love, dedication and devotion for the art. They were not much concerned about monitory returns. These artists even though semi educated are highly intelligent and have inherited great talents.
It is very unfortunate that there is not much of encouragement for these artists from the Governments. They are not eligible for any pension, or health care benefit. At this rate it is hard to predict how long this great symbol of culture will exist in our society.

Sree Durga Parameshwari Dashavathara Mandali,Kateelu is famous for 'Harake aata' and now there are 5 melas performing to cope up with huge bookings by devotees. It is on record that Harake aata bookings have touched till 2031 which will surely be a Ginnes Record eligible. In fact the yakshagana harake aata has beome so pupular that there is huge demand for artists which is in pausity now adays. There are huge numbers of devotees coming forward to sponsor the needs of artists in setting the new mela shows the devotion of temple devotees across the nation. It is believed that more than sponsoring the 'aata'viewing the play itself is more devine.Every artist as well as viewers, and seva karthas have their own devine experiences.
The 5th Yakshagana mela of Kateel which was operational only two years back has its Bhagavatha Sri Patla Satheesh Shetty a young bhagavatha of today. His 'Bhagavathike' is so versatile and melodious that even a lay man becomes stunned by listening to his way of singing.
