Udupi: Hard-earned Earnings in Cash and Valuables Go up in Smoke in Hutment Fire

Udupi : One of the16 hutments coming under the purview of the city body, located behind the office of the department of agriculture at Adi Udupi caught fire on Sunday and the loss has been estimated at Rs 2 lakh.

This hut belonging to Rudrappa and Devamma couple from Haveri caught fire at a time when there was nobody around. The neighbours put up a brave fight to put off fire.  But by this time the fire had engulfed the entire area.

Money amounting to Rs 95,000 to one lakh, 2 tola gold and utensils were engulfed by the fire. All these families had ration cards for them, but no basic amenities, as claimed by them.

There was no complaint to the police. But office-bearers of the employee organization are said to have helped and comforted them.
