Bangalore, June 14 (IANS) Controversial self-styled godman Nityananada was Thursday arrested and sent to a day's judicial custody, hours after he was granted bail by a local court in another case.
"We have arrested Nityananda after the executive magistrate remanded him for a day's judicial custody, as we apprehended danger to his life because of anger and resentment against him in the public," Inspector General of Police (IGP) Bhaskar Rao told IANS.
Soon after the 32-year-old Nityananda came out of the district court in Ramanagara, 40 km from here, on securing bail, police whisked him away to the Ramanagara deputy commissioner's office and filed another case against him under section 151 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) to prevent any untoward incident and maintain law and order.
"As Nityananda's presence in his ashram can be a cause for public nuisance and disturb peace, we have requested the magistrate (Sri Rami Reddy) to keep him in custody. He will be lodged in Mysore jail," Rao said.
Earlier, Ramanagara district judge Komala, who heard Nityananda's application, granted bail in a case filed against him by a local news channel for causing hurt and criminal intimidation at a media conference June 7 in his ashram at Bidadi, about 30 km from here.
"Nityananda was set free after one of his devotees deposited a surety (bond) of Rs.50,000 with the court," public prosecutor Mohan Kumar told reporters.

Nithyananda granted bail
Bangalore (PTI): Controversial self-styled godman Nithyananda, arrested in an assault case, was today granted bail by a Ramanagara court.
Judicial First Class Magistrate Komala granted the bail. Nithyananda was sent to one-day police custody yesterday after he surrendered before the court in Ramanagara, about 40 km from here. He had later filed a bail petition.
The self-styled godman, already facing criminal charges including rape and out on bail after his arrest in 2010, courted fresh trouble when police on June 8 booked him and his followers for allegedly assaulting a mediaperson during a press conference at his ashram at Bidadi near here.
The press meet was held in the backdrop of a US-based woman alleging that Nithyananda had sexually abused her for five years, a charge that triggered public outrage and protests by Kannada groups. A search warrant was issued by police against him even as a high-level team of officials and police continued their searches at his ashram.
