New Delhi: Moily hits back at corporate honchos for criticising govt

Published Date: 14 Jun, 2012 (5:58 PM)

New Delhi (PTI): Hitting back at corporate honchos criticising the government over the current state of the economy, Corporate Affairs Minister Veerappa Moily today said "perceptions cannot undo fundamentals" and Azim Premji and Narayana Murthy should speak with optimism.

"We have come out from 2008 depression...of 2010 depression. In 2011-12, our FDI position is very good, you cannot say it is not good. Perception cannot undo fundamentals," Moily told PTI in an interview.

He was reacting to IT major Wipro Chairman Azim Premji's statement that a "leaderless" India's image has suffered internationally. Also, Infosys co-founder N R Narayana Murthy has lamented over the current state of affairs of the economy.

"We could face two world economic Tsunamis...this can be managed if positive perceptions come. Like Premji and Narayana Murthy should become the champions of the country. I require them to speak with that kind of a patriotism, which is necessary," he said, adding, "If what Premji and Narayan Murthy is correct, how can Mukesh Ambani say that they are confident to have a market cap of Rs one trillion crore?"

He added that while it was a fact that many important Bills were awaiting Parliamentary approval, the onus was not on the UPA-led government, but on opposition parties not allowing passage of the Bills.

"Yes, there are certains Bills pending, like GST, DTC, they are pending no doubt and that is beyond our control, because ultimately Parliament has to do it and in Parliament there is confrontation attitude from the opposition, mainly the BJP, they are not allowing these measures to be passed," he said.

For this, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh should not be held responsible or touted as an ineffective leader, Moily added.

Mr Moily has made some very valid points.

Infosys and others in the IT industry have received free land to build their offices. They have received incredible tax benefits. All because of the generosity of the various governments. If the governments treated them like every other industry, the IT companies would not have made much profit. Without profits, they could not have expanded the way they have.

While running a business is hard, the government hand-outs ensure that the companies cannot easily fail. Has the government given such protection to others? Hardly. So Mr Narayan Murthy, if he is really honest, must first demand that the IT companies return all the free goodies to the government. No free land, no tax-rebates. Then Mr Murthy is playing on alevel playing field. Any criticism of the government will then make better sense to common man.

Because every state is competing to get the investments and industry, the export-oriented companies are having a field day at the cost of poor people who are losing their lands for the SEZs. China model replicated in India.

"Anna Hazzare is fighting for a good cause and you did not allow him to get the lokpal bill passed in the Parliament. Politicians labbelled him as anti-National.... I feel sorry for the current politicians..they are not at all patriots." - Valerian D' Souza, Dubai., UAE.

I have heard plenty of rubbish before, but the above comment takes the cake.

What is the cause that Anna Hazare is fighting for? I can't see what it is. Witch-hunting - yes, but cause - no.

Where there are no measurements, we cannot set no goals and hope for solutions. Where are measurements in Anna's bazaari noise? Corruption, by itself, cannot be measured. It is more in the mind than anywhere else. How can a law be written just on that basis?

If we identify bribes as the form of corruption we are trying to tackle through a particular law, I think we already have sufficient laws to cover them. A new law is not going to take the bribes away.

It is every citizen's duty to avoid giving bribes. Only then will the bribes disappear from the society. For example, when people try to come from abroad, they bring in things where no tax (duty) has been paid in the country where the items have been bought. The citizens must immediately pay the appropriate duty to the customs officers at the airports.

But do our good citizens do it DUTIfully? Unfortunately not. Instead of paying full duty, our citizens pay bribes to the customs officers.

We think, because we are paying smaller amounts in bribes, we must be less guilty. And because, in our opinion the politicians collect crores in bribes, they are the real guilty party.

No sir, it does not work that way. Paying even one rupee in bribe is inethical and unlawful.

aane kaddaroo kaLLa. adike kaddaroo kaLLa. We must first ask Anna Hazare to cure us from bribe-giving. Only after that, let him tackle our political enemies.

I request all people to use their prudence and understand the dynamics of economy. China is facing slowdown too, our country is facing slowdown not because of congress but because of coalition govt culture. Rise above communalism , the situation is not going to change even if BJP comes to election next term!

This is the reality!

A person who can manage a company with their own finance doesnot mean they can manage a government until they are dictators as a owner of a company can be compared to dictator as he doesnot have to answer anyone as there is no opposition party or people like anna hazare etc

Can you just answer a small question
Why was SM Krishna & chandrababu naidu govt defeated as in their period both karnataka & Andra pradesh were in peak in development & attracting foreign investment etc

Dear Moily....
There was no depression what so ever in Indian economy due to world recession. India was strong enough financially to withstand global financial storm. Political attitude in India was not so favourable...and what Premji and Murthy was saying because they had swam the sea...and you don't know how to run a company and only know to get the kickbacks when Company starts their business....
First politicians has to become true patriots. They are the worst lot of the society nibbling everything...I am very sorry to say the above because Anna Hazzare is fighting for a good cause and you did not allow him to get the lokpal bill passed in the Parliament. Politicians labbelled him as anti-National.... I feel sorry for the current politicians..they are not at all patriots.

What does Moily think the Governement of India is?

Moily needs to realize the fact that economy has slowed down, and India may get into a recession. They either have to play fair game in the global market ot get out of the idea of globalization completely.

The vodafone fiasco has made most foriegn investors run away, the fiasco with walmart does not send any good signals either.

S&P will soon declare Indias credit ratings to junk status. So it may be a good idea to start some infrastructure projects, improve roads, buidl new govenemtnt building, give jobs to people and stimulate economy. If optipism were to slove all the problems, Obama's election would solve all problmes, but it has not and someone needs to do the ground work.

This might also be a good opportunity to spend on infrastructure and have better roads, hospitals, airports, train stations, drainage and sewer system.

Stimulate the economy Mr.Moily
